Durang Atembe Second Islander to Exit ‘Love Island SA’

We hate to see a whole snack go.

Published

on

Cameroon-born, Cape Town-based fitness trainer, Durang Atembe, became the second Islander to leave the Love Island SA villa, after being dumped on Thursday (11 March). The 22-year-old former rugby player follows the exit of media entrepreneur Jay Freemantle (23), who left the villa earlier on 9th March.

After host, Leandie du Randt, visited the Islanders to oversee yet another round of recoupling to take place in last night’s episode, Durang was the only Islander left standing – resulting in his departure from the villa. “I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the villa with the other contestants and I have no regrets. I took a chance to find love and I enjoyed connecting with Thimna, even though we didn’t always see eye-to-eye with each other,” says Durang.

Love Island SA audiences saw how Jay (23) was pitted against fellow Islanders, Summer da Cruz and Sarah Fischer earlier this week before making the first exit of the season – based on public votes. “My only regret was not pursuing Rochelle sooner, as I feel we could have been strong together.” Despite being the first Islander to be dumped, a conservative Jay is still hopeful in his quest to find love. “My experience on Love Island SA was amazing. I’ve learnt a lot about myself and I won’t give up in my pursuit of finding true love.”

Nicole Wilmans Becomes The Sole Survivor on Survivor SA

Look who outwitted, outsmarted and outlasted.

Published

on

Despite smashing through every challenge and breaking the record for the most wins for individual immunity on Survivor South Africa: Immunity Island, Chappies fell two places short of walking away with the honours he paced through tough scapes in hopes to win.

The ‘Challenge Beast’ played hard throughout the season, even pulling a miracle to win immunity when it mattered the most; landing him in the coveted top three spot from which the sole survivor must emerge. But in the end, despite literally jumping through hoops and other gruelling tests to emerge many times an unstoppable beast, we are learning once more that life is trickier. Being a clear contender for the top prize leaves the underdog with plenty of room to move and execute a slick victory at the finish line. See?

Instead nine of the ten members of the jury decided Nicole’s overall game and final plea deserved this glory. Anela bowed out in the top 2, coming as close as you can get. But with a R1 million cash prize at stake on the two-hour finale special, ‘almost’ didn’t count. In the end, it was unanimously decided that Nicole had played a better

This season’s members of the jury. Photo: MNet

With Chappies already holding a Survivor South Africa record after winning seven consecutive Individual Challenges, the odds were against Nicole and Anela in the surprise final Individual Immunity Challenge.

The gruelling endurance challenge lasted over two hours, with Anela falling first before Chappies blacked out and toppled from the precarious balance stakes to hand Nicole Individual Immunity and a seat in the Final Two. Effectively, the choice of who she would sit next to rested with her, as she would cast the only vote at the penultimate Tribal Council.

At camp, Chappies did his best to charm her with’ inside info’ gleaned from his breakfast with Jury member Anesu, while Anela took a soft-touch approach and told her he’d be at peace with whatever decision she arrived at. At Tribal Council, both Chappies and Anela did their best to tug at her heartstrings with emotional appeals, but her mind was made up over who she thought she had a better chance of defeating before the Jury – and she duly wrote Chappies’ name down, making him the ninth and final member of the Jury.

At the final Tribal Council, Anela opened the conversation by explaining how he’d used his sports coaching experience to set up his philosophy for the game, focussing on being the best at ‘getting the little things right’ and playing on pillars of ‘freedom of expression’, ‘simplicity’ and ‘flexibility’. Nicole explained how she’d never erred from her intention of playing the game with integrity, reliability, honesty and trust and how her decision to fight Chappies for Individual Immunity earlier in the game, while everyone else opted for a Spaghetti Bolognese feast, showed her determination.

Each of the Jury members took a different tack when speaking to the Final Two: Renier asked them both to explain why they deserved the title more than the other; Anesu questioned Anela about whether he’d genuinely stayed true to his intentions and Amy asked both whether they’d intentionally pretended to be anything other than their true selves.

Shaun made the simple statement that his vote lay with Anela; Kiran asked them to detail moves they’d considered, but never made; Marisha revealed that she was listening intently because she couldn’t decide which to vote for; Tyson said his decision was made and couldn’t be changed and Chappies questioned Anela about how he’d embraced his vulnerability during the game.

In the end, Nicole’s blend of sheer tenacity and integrity was enough to sway the Jury in her favour, trouncing Anela in the final vote.

Abasemzini is Not Another Awful Show Parading Black Family Failure

How this new reality show is creating a safe environment for healing.

Published

on

There’s a litany of dreadful reality shows all paddling the same stale narrative of dysfunction within black families. Abasemzini, which premiered on Friday, 3 September at 20:30 on 1Magic, is not one of them. The 13-part series, now two episodes in, seeks to explore complicated relationships between mothers and their mothers-in-law within the landscape of the traditional African marriage institution.

We tuned in on the promise that the show marked an exit from the tired trope of mothers in law and the women married to their sons are bound to be on each other’s necks.  “The aim of (of the show) is to restore happy families and equip both parties with conflict management skills they can use in their everyday lives” Nomsa Philiso, the Director of Local Entertainment Channels at M-Net said in a press statement ahead of the show’s premiere.

This intention could be why we are seeing, instead of chairs flying and witchcraft and social grant family scandals, families being put in an environment where they can actually focus on the underlying emotions shaping their behavioural patterns. All these realities matter, of-course, including some of the messy drama that we see splashed across all the shows. That said, it’s all we see about dynamics in black households now.

Where the producers of Abasemzini could have made the decision to create a toxic environment in which these women are merely attacking each other in unfortunate TV drama spectacles, the focus has been solely on healing.

The show’s presenters Lehasa Moloi and Puleng March have maintained a calm vibe, encouraging the mothers and their daughters-in-law units to understand each other. It’s refreshing also to see the conversation about mental health being elevated in a way that is natural in this type of environment. Clinical psychologist and TV host Nozibusiso Nyawose and psychologist Vuyo Themba assist each pair through a range of bootcamp exercises. Some of these are fun, but others are more serious treatments to deep emotions held by those taking part.

We will be watching. Abasemzini airs Fridays at 20:30 on 1Magic.

My Kitchen Rules SA S3 Unveils the First Table of Five Teams

Culinary hopefuls aim to delight under pressure.

Published

on

The third season of My Kitchen Rules SA has revealed the first group of home cooks looking to pace through various challenge and prove themselves culinary flair on the way to winning the cooking competition.  The first table of five teams will battle it out over the next five weeks in the Instant Restaurant phase of the competition, in the hope of impressing judges David Higgs and J’Something enough to make it through to the end and walk off with a cool R1 million

Palesa M (34) & Palesa N (31) | Besties from Johannesburg

Friends for 5 years, Palesa M is a Group Executive Officer for a media agency, a UN Ambassador and founder of an NPO dedicated to empowering youth. Palesa N is a Digital Designer – and both recently started their own fashion lines.

Palesa N’s parents have run a restaurant from home for the last 25 years, which is where she fell in love with cooking. Palesa M’s inspiration comes from her Grandmother, who introduced her to the kitchen at a tender age and taught her plenty of different techniques. While Palesa M’s food style is adventurous, creative and intuitive, her bestie Palesa N says hers is ‘very old school, with a modern influence’.

“We are compatible in terms of our food preferences and share the work evenly – and we are always happy to help each other,” says Palesa N. “We entered MKRSA because it was a great platform for Palesa and I to do what we love the most – which is to cook. And the cherry on top is that we do it together!” says Palesa M.

Brett (50) & Aidan (25) |Dad & Son Buddies from Fourways

Father & Son events company owners Aidan and Brett are inseparable: working, playing and cooking together. “He’s my best friend – I was a single Dad and the twins have always been with me. We have travelled the world playing golf and all 3 of my kids mean absolutely everything to me,” says Brett.

Brett and Aidan have been working together for many years and even purchased an Events company before COVID. They don’t go a single day without seeing or talking to each other.

Brett has been cooking since the age of 6. “I experimented with loads of food as a kid. I then ran the Air Force kitchen, which taught me loads. After my golfing career, I opened two restaurants and learnt through trial and error – my chefs also taught me loads,” he says. As for Aidan, “I love pap and Brisket sold on the side of the road. R30 and you get some sauce and a bean salad with it. I get it so often that I have an account with the guy by my work,” he says.

Karen (34) & Tenille (39) | Alberton Moms

Chatty, wholesome besties Karen and Tenille met through their husbands, who went to school together – and they’ve been inseparable for 16 years. Karen is a full-time Mom with plenty of side hustles and Tenille is an Optometrist.

“When life throws me lemons, I pour the tequila,” says Tenille of her positive outlook on life. What about her partner? “What’s not to love – she has a heart of gold and her nervous giggle is contagious”. The feeling is mutual: “we work well together and fill out each other’s blanks,” says Karen. “We taste and encourage each other and help with whatever the other one needs. Tenille is an extremely positive person and will always find the good in any situation. She has taught me to take any situation and learn from it – and make it positive”.

They enjoy mixing Asian flavours with traditional fare but prefer sticking to their roots. Karen’s favourite ingredient is “butter, butter and butter!”. She says she loves mixing meat with Asian staples like soya, sesame oil, chilli – and more butter.

Retha (30) & Tshepi (29) |Globetrotters from Johannesburg

Sassy, energetic, socially conscious and smart – friends Retha and Tshepi hail from Oaklands and Craighall, respectively. Tshepi is the planner and thinker while Retha hates losing.

“I taught myself how to cook, learning recipes, especially when it comes to healthy food, is important to me,” says Retha. “Healthy food can be flavourful, but from there I was always curious about how far I could take my cooking. Acts of kindness are my love language, so wanting to cook for others fuelled my interest in learning and growing my cooking skills”.

Tshepi learnt how to bake from her best friend and loves learning new things from her sister when she can. “I enjoy exploring international recipes, specifically Mediterranean foods and Asian recipes. I use lots of vegetables: baby spinach, tenderstem broccoli, asparagus, mange tout, carrots, sweet potato and cauliflower,” she says.

Nevi (48) & Craig (49) | Wife & Husband from Bedfordview

Nevi and Craig met in a coffee shop 20 years ago – and have been married for the last 12 years. He’s the Director of a hospitality company and she owns an events company. While Nevi thrives under pressure, that’s when Craig gets flustered – but they still love hosting celebrations of every kind, with food normally at the centre.

“Craig and I find reasons to bring people and food together. Our kitchen is the life and soul of our home. Everyone seems to gather there, whilst meals are being cooked and desserts prepared – or dishes washed,” says Nevi. “Over the years, we have received countless compliments relating to our perceived talent, entertaining visits and our food creations. A few people have suggested that we enter MKR and the current timing was perfect”. “For us, there is always room for two in the kitchen – in fact, we renovated our kitchen to make this a reality. We’ve always been a team in the kitchen.”

Their food dream is to travel and experience the major food capitals of the world. “The first thing we do when settling in a foreign country is experience the culture and food,” says Nevi. “We want to engage and be involved with restaurants and eateries abroad and possibly start a blog of our encounters and experiences”.

My Kitchen Rules SA will be available on DStv Premium on M-Net (Channel 101) from Sunday, 19 September at 18:00.
