1990’s Black Sitcoms to Watch on Netflix Now

Girlfriends, Moesha, Sister Sister.

Published

on

Marcus Paulk (Moesha) at 'The Source Hip-Hop Music Awards 2000'

When Netflix (US) announced they had obtained rights to stream a slew of evergreen 1990’s black sitcom classics, we got in touch with Netflix (SA) to find out whether this would be applicable for South Africa.

Imagine being able to binge through all the seasons of golden favourites like The Parkers ( “Hey Mr. Oglevee!), Sister Sister, Girlfriends, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Martin, Moesha, The Steve Harvey Show et al!

While the answer was an unfortunate “not at this time”, locals can at least catch rounds of  Girlfriends, Moesha and Sister, Sister. I swear I caught a glimpse of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air not so long ago, but that seems to have since run through the license.

GIRLFRIENDS

It’s wild how relevant this 1990’s show is to the modern socio-political landscape. It’s fun and nostalgic how a group of African American friends were navigating a pre-social media and less digital world, highlighting complex social themes while making us laugh hysterically. But it’s fascinating how maybe the technology is all that has evolved.

Racism and its micro-aggressions, dating as a black woman, navigating corporate as a black woman, sexism, colourism and other social ills are still as rampant now as they were back then. You can watch Girlfriends anytime, and literally, feel like they just been portraying the essence of your entire life.

The sitcom follows the lives of close friends Joan, Maya, Lynn and Toni.

MOESHA

Some of you really unaware that Brandy is a literal legend. Further to her blockbuster performing music career, that’s also Disney’s first black Cinderella!

1990’s kids also know that she’s beloved Moesha Denise Mitchell! Brandy’s hit sitcom ran for a total of six seasons, each as binge-worthy as the previous. The sitcom is focused on her life as a high school student living with her family in Los Angeles.

SISTER SISTER

The 1990s were also wild because they would literally search the whole earth for identical twins who could pull off an iconic pair, find them, and then give us a whole classic.

They did it with Sister, Sister, an American television sitcom that aired a total of six seasons between 1994 and 1999. It starred identical celebrity twin sisters Tia and Tamera Mowry, who went on to become household names.

The twins were separated at birth. One adopted by a single mother and the other by a couple. 14 years later the girls are reunited and it’s nothing but entertaining scenes from there onwards.

Why Rége-Jean Page Won’t be Back for Season 2 of ‘Bridgerton’

What’s the tea?

Published

on

News that Bridgerton‘s breakout star won’t be returning for the second season sent fans of the period series into a frenzy over the weekend. It comes after Netflix and Shondaland both announced the news on Friday, revealing that Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, will not be part of the show’s highly anticipated season.

But while the news riled up the show’s fans, many who instantly swore they wouldn’t be tuning in for the second season, it was never going to be any other way. Conspiracies of a rift between the British-Zimbabwean actor and producers may have been fun to dive into, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Sometimes, things must be done by the book. In this case, things are flowing in the direction of the Julia Quinn novels on which the series is based. The character’s storyline is concluded in the first book “The Duke and I.”

That’s why despite everyone (myself included) freaking out, the end of Page’s journey came as no surprise to him and all involved. Talking to Variety, the 31 year actor explained how he’d be contracted to do the show for one season as per the book.

“It’s a one-season arc. It’s going to have a beginning, middle, end – give us a year,” Page said to the publication. “[I thought] ‘That’s interesting,’ because then it felt like a limited series. I get to come in, I get to contribute my bit and then the Bridgerton family rolls on.”

‘How to Ruin A Christmas’ gets a Sequel on Netflix!

We are ready for more!

Published

on

I do love seeing original South African stories getting their flowers. Last Christmas, Netflix came through with the series ‘How to Ruin Christmas’, a three-part series chronicling the world of two families. The Twalas and the Sellos were the messy, crazy, dysfunctional, funny, adorable and most importantly, relatable. It would be a fresh departure from western frames of what families do on Christmas.

By the time the first season ended,  the most asked question, (after the Zoom favourite, “Can you hear me?) ” had to be, “So what exactly does Khaya have to tell Tumi???” People just HAVE to know what the hunky Khaya has to tell our favourite train-wreck, Tumi, and more importantly, does it mean it’s over for them? And what of the peoples’ favourite sheep, Succulent? Did he really survive the festive season?

RELATED: ‘HOW TO RUIN A CHRISTMAS’ TRAILER, PLOT, CAST & MORE

When we created the series, we certainly didn’t think our days would be spent fielding threatening questions, even from our own friends and family, on when these, and other story questions will be answered. Well, thanks to Netflix, we get to put everyone out of their misery, as we get to Ruin Christmas yet again! That’s right; our favourite bunch of colourful characters are back for another season of How to Ruin Christmas.

It’s great seeing African stories getting their flowers on Netflix.

The first season gave the world a taste of our customs and traditions when it comes to weddings and how we, as South Africans, celebrate Christmas. More importantly, we were hopefully able to spread some joy and laughter throughout the globe, on the back of the tough year that was 2020.

Gearing up for another season honestly feels like getting ready to “go home” for Christmas, where you get to see and catch up with your favourite, and messy, family members. And no families are messier than the Sellos and the Twalas, who are now, bound in matrimony. So, it goes without saying that you should expect more drama, laughs, tears and all-around festive season joy in the new season.

We look forward to bringing some of your favourite characters back to life and spreading a little more Christmas cheer this December, in true, Ramaphakela Siblings’ style.

Last Christmas, through the Netflix series ‘How to Ruin Christmas’, South Africans were introduced to two families who immediately became their favourite dysfunctional, not-so-guilty pleasure – The Twalas and the Sellos were the messy, yet relatable onscreen family we never knew we needed!

Well, thanks to Netflix, we get to put everyone out of their misery, as we get to Ruin Christmas yet again! That’s right; our favourite bunch of colourful characters are back for another season of How to Ruin Christmas.

It’s great to know that when Netflix said: “Made by Africans, Watched by the World” they meant it. That ethos has given us the opportunity to create authentically South African characters that we can relate to and tell stories that reflect our realities. In the first season, we were able to give the world a taste of our customs and traditions when it comes to weddings and how we, as South Africans, celebrate Christmas. More importantly, we were hopefully able to spread some joy and laughter throughout the globe, on the back of the tough year that was 2020.
