10 International Series to Stream on Showmax Right Now

Fargo S4, Raised by Wolves, The Stand and more.

Published

on

One thing about Showmax, they will give you access to the great HBO content that is somewhat tough to get hold of in South Ah, especially if you aren’t into watching series on a television set.

The catalogue overall has been growing, meaning there’s more value for the coin over there. A list of recent shows we’ve loved on the video streaming platform include P Valley, I Might Destroy You, Yvonne Orji’s comedy special and, of course, Powerbook II: Ghost.

There’s more to the plug of international series you might want to give a go, like the first seasons of Raised by Wolves, The Capture, The Stand and The Bay, as well as new seasons of Fargo, Bosch, High Maintenance

RAISED BY WOLVES S1

The biggest TV series ever shot in South Africa, Raised by Wolves is an HBO sci-fi show that centres on two androids tasked with raising human children on virgin planet Kepler-22b after the earth was destroyed in a great war.

Raised By Wolves South Africa

Raised by Wolves has already been nominated for three 2021 Critics’ Choice Super Awards: Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Series, Best Actor: Sci-Fi for Travis Fimmel (Vikings’ Ragnar) and Best Actress: Sci-Fi for Danish actress Amanda Collin.

Four-time Oscar nominee Ridley Scott, who directed the sci-fi classics AlienBlade Runner and The Martian, executive produces and directs the first two episodes. Inverse hails the show as “Ridley Scott’s best sci-fi since Alien… there’s no TV show quite like it.”

HBO has already renewed Raised by Wolves for a second season, with NME saying, “Ridley Scott’s AI stunner is on a different planet… one of 2020’s most unmissable TV experiences.”

THE CAPTURE S1

Seeing is deceiving in this riveting eight-episode BBC crime thriller that centres on former Special Forces Lance Corporal Shaun Emery. He’s accused of kidnapping – with damning CCTV footage to prove the crime. But as Detective Inspector Rachel Carey of Homicide and Serious Crime Command digs deeper, she begins to uncover a conspiracy that calls everything about the case into question.

Already renewed for a second season, The Capture stars Critics’ Choice nominee Holliday Grainger (The Borgias) and Callum Turner (War & Peace), who was nominated for a 2020 BAFTA for the role. Golden Globe winner Ron Perlman (Sons of AnarchyHellboy) and Critics’ Choice nominee Laura Haddock (Guardians of the GalaxyLuther) co-star.

Written and directed by BAFTA winner Ben Chanan (The Missing), The Capture has a 92% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with The Times dubbing it the “thinking man’s Bodyguard,” The Guardian “perfect TV,” and Time Magazine, “The rare thriller that is not just smart and gripping, but also deeply engaged with our bizarre, often terrifying present…”

THE STAND

Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, The Stand is an apocalyptic vision of a world decimated by plague and embroiled in an elemental struggle between good and evil.

The fate of mankind rests on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old Mother Abagail (Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg from GhostThe Color PurpleSister Act) and a handful of survivors. Their worst nightmares are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the Dark Man (Golden Globe winner Alexander Skarsgård from Big Little LiesTrue Blood).

The stellar ensemble cast includes 2020 Emmy nominee Jovan Adepo (Watchmen), People’s Choice winner Katherine McNamara (Shadowhunters: The Mortal InstrumentsMaze Runner), MTV Award winner Heather Graham (Boogie Nights, Californication), Teen Choice winner Nat Wolff (The Fault In Our Stars), MTV Awards nominees Amber Heard (Aquaman) and James Marsden (Westworld), Oscar nominee Greg Kinnear (As Good As It GetsLittle Miss Sunshine), Golden Globe nominee Irene Bedard (PocahontasWestworld), Sundance winner Brad William Henke (Orange Is The New Black), and rising star Owen Teague (It, Mrs Fletcher).

Showrunner, executive producer and Emmy nominee Benjamin Cavell (JustifiedHomeland) says, “None of us could have imagined that Stephen King’s 40-year-old masterpiece about a global pandemic would come to be so eerily relevant,” adding that the series includes a new coda that King has wanted to add for decades.

FARGO S4

Created by Emmy winner Noah Hawley (Legion, the upcoming untitled Star Trek sequel) as a spin-off of the Coen brothers’ Oscar-winning classic movie, Fargo has won three Golden Globes, six Emmys and a Peabody Award. It’s #37 on IMDb’s Top Rated TV list, with an 8.9/10 score, and holds a 93% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Season 4, which was Complex’s TV show of 2020, is set in Kansas City in 1950, with four-time Emmy-winning comedian Chris Rock starring as Loy Cannon, the head of the African American crime family who trades sons with the head of the Italian Mafia as part of a tenuous truce.

Golden Globe winner Ben Whishaw (A Very English ScandalMary Poppins Returns), Emmy winner Glynn Turman (Super 8), BAFTA nominee Jessie Buckley (Chernobyl), and Teen Choice nominee Jason Schwartzman (The Grand Budapest Hotel) co-star. Rock and Turman are up for Best Actor and Best Supporting actor respectively at the 2021 Critics’ Choice Awards.

Fargo, as in past seasons, manages to be both more dramatic, and more comic, than almost any other show on TV right now,” says NPR, while Complex hails it as “high art for TV lovers… There aren’t many shows shot this well, nor are there many shows taking this many risks between the first and last frames, seemingly without a care for convention or consideration… If only more TV series could operate at Fargo levels of greatness.”

BOSCH S6

Based on Michael Connelly’s bestselling crime novels The Overlook and Dark Sacred Night, Season 6 of Bosch finds Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver from The Good Wife and The Town) at the centre of a complex murder case, a messy federal investigation, and a catastrophic threat to Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Edgar (Jamie Hector from The Wire) sets about cleaning house and Irving (Lance Reddick from The Wire) kicks off his mayoral campaign.

The ever-popular Emmy and Saturn Award-nominated series holds an 8.4/10 score on IMDb and has a 100% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. As Newsday says, Bosch is “still one of TV’s top addictions.”

Guest stars this season include Tzi Ma (Mulan, The Man in the High Castle), and Julie Ann Emery (Better Call SaulPreacher). Bosch has been renewed for a seventh and final season.

THE BAY S1

When detective sergeant, family liaison officer and mother of two Lisa Armstrong (three-time BAFTA Scotland nominee Morven Christie from Grantchester) ends up having sex in an alleyway with a man she meets on a night out (Jonas Armstrong from Ripper Street), she isn’t expecting to see him again… until he turns up as the prime suspect in the disappearance of his own kids on the very night Lisa was with him.

Dubbed the ‘Northern Broadchurch’, the six-episode British drama series has an 80% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with The Guardian calling it “a satisfying, knotty, plotty hour.”

The series was nominated for a Best Actress BAFTA in Scotland and for Best Director at the Wales BAFTAs, as well as for Best Drama Script at the 2020 Irish Film and Television Awards. With a viewership of over 7 million in the UK, The Bay has already been renewed for a second season.

THE ROOKIE S1 & S2

The Rookie stars multiple People’s Choice Award winner Nathan Fillion (CastleFirefly) as John Nolan, who is pursuing his dream to join the LAPD after a divorce. But as their oldest rookie, he’s met with skepticism from those who see him as just a walking midlife crisis.

Created by Alexi Hawley (Castle and The Following), this easy-to-love police procedural has an 8.1/10 score on IMDb and was nominated for a 2020 Emmy award for its stunt work.

The cast includes Alyssa Diaz (Ray Donovan’s Teresa), Melissa O’Neil (Dark MatterCondor), Eric Winter (The Mentalist), and Black Reel nominee Richard T. Jones (Santa Clarita Diet). Also look out for guest appearances from the likes of Alan Tudyk (Firefly), Enver Gjokaj (Avengers), Felicia Day (Supernatural), and Seth Green (Robot Chicken), as well as celeb cameos from the likes of Ryan Seacrest, Katy Perry, will.i.am and Lionel Richie.

HIGH MAINTENANCE S3 & S4

Still keeping spirits high and rolling with the times, comedy anthology series High Maintenance follows New York’s most chilled-out deliveryman and weed dealer as he visits his clientele, dipping into the lives of people across New York.

High Maintenance has an 8.1/10 score on IMDb and a 100% critics rating for both Season 3 and Season 4 on Rotten Tomatoes. “There are as many fascinating New York stories as there are fascinating New Yorkers, and High Maintenance continues to mine the depths for the most luminous ones,” says indieWire. “Sinclair and Blichfeld’s world feels real and lived in – a real show, about a real city.”

High Maintenance is co-created by Emmy-winning casting director Katja Blichfeld (30 Rock) and series star Ben Sinclair, who plays Rufus Mann, aka The Guy. The anthology format lends itself to a host of guest appearances, including Britt Lower (Future ManCasual) in Season 3 and Golden Globe nominee and BAFTA winner Rebecca Hall (Tales from the LoopFrost/NixonVicky Cristina Barcelona), Emmy nominee Nick Kroll (The LeagueKroll Show), and Ken Leung (IndustryThe BlacklistLost) in Season 4.

MOMMA NAMED ME SHERIFF S2

Express from the US from 15 February, first on Showmax

He still lives at home with his Momma, his best friend is a doll, and he’s the Sheriff of Old Town.

Momma Named Me Sheriff is a spinoff from Mr. Pickles (2014-2019), the cult Adult Swim series about the Goodman family, who live in Old Town with their lovable pet dog, Mr. Pickles, a deviant border collie with a secret satanic streak.

The spin-off is created by Mr. Pickles creators Will Carsola and Dave Stewart, with Carsola writing, directing and reprising his role as Sheriff, along with Emmy nominee Jay Johnston as his new deputy Stanley Goodman, Golden Globe nominee Brooke Shields as Beverly Goodman, and Stewart as Floyd.

UTOPIA FALLS

Utopia Falls is set in the domed city of New Babyl, which holds an annual coming-of-age arts contest called The Exemplar. When a group of young competitors uncovers a hidden archive of cultural artifacts from the old world, it throws everything they know about New Babyl into question… Den of Geek describes Utopia Falls as “Divergent meets Step Up,” while Polygon prefers “The Hunger Games meet Glee.”

Utopia Falls is written and executive produced by fast-rising Canadian Screen Award-nominated writer-director R.T. Thorne (Find Me in ParisBlindspot) and Hugo Award nominee Joseph Mallozzi (Stargate SG-1Stargate: Atlantis), and stars a talented young ensemble cast, as well as Kate Drummond (Wynonna Earp) and rapper Snoop Dogg.

Utopia Falls won a 2020 Directors Guild of Canada Award for Production Design, with a further nomination for its Picture Editing.

Why Rége-Jean Page Won’t be Back for Season 2 of ‘Bridgerton’

What’s the tea?

Published

on

News that Bridgerton‘s breakout star won’t be returning for the second season sent fans of the period series into a frenzy over the weekend. It comes after Netflix and Shondaland both announced the news on Friday, revealing that Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, will not be part of the show’s highly anticipated season.

But while the news riled up the show’s fans, many who instantly swore they wouldn’t be tuning in for the second season, it was never going to be any other way. Conspiracies of a rift between the British-Zimbabwean actor and producers may have been fun to dive into, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Sometimes, things must be done by the book. In this case, things are flowing in the direction of the Julia Quinn novels on which the series is based. The character’s storyline is concluded in the first book “The Duke and I.”

That’s why despite everyone (myself included) freaking out, the end of Page’s journey came as no surprise to him and all involved. Talking to Variety, the 31 year actor explained how he’d be contracted to do the show for one season as per the book.

“It’s a one-season arc. It’s going to have a beginning, middle, end – give us a year,” Page said to the publication. “[I thought] ‘That’s interesting,’ because then it felt like a limited series. I get to come in, I get to contribute my bit and then the Bridgerton family rolls on.”

6 Things That Will Happen When Melusi Finds out Langa is his Son on ‘Gomora’

So many, so screwed.

Published

on

We’ve been waiting for this moment for almost a year, wondering when the writers and producers of Gomora would leverage on some of the show’s darkest secrets to deliver killer storylines. And now that the secrets are spilling out, and threatening lives along the way, they’ve made these moments worth the wait.

Just weeks after Thathi finally found out that its her mom Sonto who was behind the murder of her late husband Mbongeni, Gomora has moved on to the next big mess. Where Thathi almost killed Sonto after finding out how she lied to cover up the blood on her hands, Thathi’s very own skeleton almost took the life of both her son, and Melusi.

See? Lies can never be kept buried forever! It’s a chilling fact.

But even scariers, is the terror in Thathi’s eyes as she gets to watch how she can do absolutely nothing to stop the truth about her son Langa’s paternity coming out. If anything, her desperate attempts at undermining Melusi and Langa’s relationship have only made things worse for the lady.

Sabotaging the one thing she thought strengthens their bond – their passionate collaboration on Langa’s app, our fiery sister thought she’d cut the umbilical cord when she spilled water on the iPad. Little did she know the two would jump in the car on their way to purchasing a new laptop to retrieve the work in project from a cloud. And on their way, got involved in an accident that left them in the hospital.

It’s here that Gladys overheard Thathi and Pretty talking about Melusi being Langa’s biological father. Again, the clown came back to bite.

We’re feeling quite stressed for Gladys because the bond between her husband and his ex’s son had her all worked up and acting out of character. She’s supposed to have a big heart, always out to help the youngsters in Gomora who need mentorship and guidance. But this is the hubby’s ex’s son, and she thought Thathi could be using that relationship to get closer to Melusi.

“Tell your son Melusi is not his father, and he will never be!”, she yelled at Thathi this one time. It was comical to us, viewers of course because we knew the tea.

Now that she knows, it’s eating her up. Keeping secret from Melusi is only making things worse for Gladiator. Both her and Thathi are afraid of what might happen should Melusi and Langa find out they are father and son. We are afraid they might be absolutely right in all scenarios.

GLADYS & MELUSI’S MARRIAGE SUFFERS

Gladys already knows. We’d feared that Melusi would find out first and upon breaking the news to her, she’d pack up her bags and leave. This time for good! But there might be hope there, since she’s doing all she can to keep this secret under wraps. Still, however, once everyone knows, it must place a new level of strain on her marriage. It might really get serious.

LANGA FALLS OUT WITH THATHI

He’s typically such a gentleman! But lately, Thathi’s childish antics have turned Langa into the master of shade. He’s been telling her off left right and centre. Not only that, Langa has already been alluding how he wishes Melusi were his dad. In one scene, he jokingly asks Thathi why she chose Mbongeni over Melusi. She freaks out as always, going for the angry parent thing. Wait until Langa finds out that his whole life has been a big fat lie.

LANGA MOVES IN THE DOUBLE STOREY

Gladys will soon find out that all those breakfasts Langa used to eat in her house were actually contributions to the upbringing of her step son. We love how the writers have been building this storyline for almost a year, placing little crumbs everywhere. We don’t see Melusi wanting his son growing up so close to the tavern, and being so intimately linked to a well known crime family. Teddy is definitely losing that extra bedroom.

THATHI AND GLADYS MUST NOW COOPERATE

They’ve kept their rivalry going for decades, but Thathi and Gladys will have to learn to co-parent Langa. It’s going to be awkward and funny at the same time. Gladys will have to finally face her feelings of being inadequate as well because as far as we’re concerned, Melusi has done nothing to indicate that he’s still into Thathi like that.

MELUSI’S ANGER TOWARDS THATHI

That goes without saying. Thathi’s lies kept Melusi in the dark for 17 years! She lied and took his son as part of someone else’s family. How could she do this?

THE SCANDAL

When everyone finds out that Langa is Melusi’s son, it’s going to get the streets buzzing in absolute shock. They will be looking at that double storey with a side eye, wondering what other secrets undermine their perfect display. They will be looking at Sonto’s household, thinking ‘just when we thought you lot couldn’t sink any lower with your world of lies and craziness.’ They will be looking at the social worker, judging her for missing things in her own household. Pitying her. Melusi for being played for so long. Thathi for lying to keep her Sandton life rolling.

This is going get very, very interesting and we are here for it.

Gomora airs weekdays at 19:30 on Mzansi Magic, DStv channel 161.
