Showmax & CANAL+ announce Kenyan Series ‘Crime & Justice’

An East African legal drama.

Published

on

Showmax and CANAL+ have begun production on Crime & Justice, a gritty police procedural and legal show set in Nairobi.

Crime & Justice features a heavy-weight cast with Sarah Hassan (Plan B, How to Find a Husband) and Alfred Munyua (Poacher, The First Grader, Sense8) starring as Makena and Silas, the two detectives at the heart of the topical show that follows one ripped-from-the-headlines case per episode, all the way through to the courtroom verdict.

Alfred Munyua Silas has been cast as lead on the looming show.

“When I first read the script, I loved the delivery and realness of Silas as a character. It’s not exaggerated and he’s no Rambo hero; he just tackles his cases the normal way. I found a very real edge with this script, and I hope I’ll do justice to the role,” says Munyua.

Hassan says she is looking forward to playing a detective for the first time in her career. “This is a very different character; I’ve never played anything like Makena before. It’s very exciting to get a character that makes me grow as an actor.”

Hassan and Munyua are joined by Maqbul Mohammed (Varshita, Auntie Boss) as DCI Boss Kebo, Paul Ogola (Sense 8, Kati Kati) as Prosecutor Sokoro and Brian Ogola (Lusala, Disconnect) as Caleb, the resident pathologist, as well as the stage and screen legend John Sibi-Okumu (The Constant Gardener, The First Grader), Muhugu Theuri (Pillow Talk, Pieces of Us), Brian Abajah (Sincerely Daisy), Martin Githinji (Sue na Jonnie, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind) and Justin Mirichii (Rafiki, Watu Wote) in guest roles.

Crime & Justice is directed and produced by Adam Neutzsky-Wulff, whose slate of films and series include All The Little Things We Kill, starring Elizabeth Marvel (House of CardsHomeland), and You Are Here, starring Teen Choice nominee Jason Dohring (Veronica MarsiZombieThe Originals), Peter Vack (Love LifeThe Bold Type), Lea Thompson (Switched at BirthBack to the Future) and MTV Movie Award winner William Baldwin (Dirty Sexy MoneyGossip GirlParenthood).

Working alongside Adam in the production team is an all-star Kenyan crew, including co-producer Maureen Wanjiku (Subira, Kenya’s 2019 Oscar entry, East Africa’s Got Talent); two-time Kalasha award-winning lighting technician Walter Odhiambo (Plan B40 Sticks); cinematographer Sammy Maina (Lost in Africa, Country Queen), who’ll be taking over from Helge Gerull after episode 2; art director Eugene Oyoo (Kenya’s 2018 Oscar entry Supa Modo); and casting director Lorella Jowi (Watu Wote, Kenya’s first Oscar-nominated film).

While this is the first Kenyan Showmax Original, it is not the first foray into original Kenyan content for the MultiChoice Group, Showmax’s parent company. With more than 25 years of experience in Kenya with its video entertainment businesses GOtv and DStv, MultiChoice produces more than 10 original Kenyan productions each year, including some of the most popular series on its flagship East African channel, Maisha Magic, like KinaSelinaPete and Chozi. Showmax subscribers benefit from this wealth of content, as many of these much-loved shows are also available on the standalone streaming service.

“We are fundamentally an African business and are invested in telling African stories that reflect the lives, languages and cultures of the continent. We believe in African talent and look forward to shining the international spotlight on not only Kenyan stars, but the Kenyan technical industry’s capabilities,” says Yolisa Phahle, CEO of MultiChoice Connected Video. “We believe that streaming video is a powerful way to deliver these shared stories. This is one of many more Showmax Originals we have in the pipeline across Africa.”

Crime & Justice follows the announcement of the first CANAL+ and MultiChoice co-production earlier this year, Blood Psalms, which will premiere on Showmax in 2021.

Based on ancient African mythology, Blood Psalms is an epic 10-part series that chronicles the rise to power of a fierce teenaged princess, Zazi (Bokang Phelane from Keeping ScoreEmoyeni), who battles a world-ending prophecy to navigate her people through ancient curses, long-standing tribal vendettas, and the wrath of the Gods.

CANAL+, which will distribute Crime & Justice to its French-speaking base, is also committed to entertainment in Africa. Fabrice Faux, Chief Content Officer of CANAL+ INTERNATIONAL, says, As part of our strategy of providing our subscribers with the best original content from the continent, we are proud to partner with Showmax and enrich myCanal as well as CANAL+ channels with such premium series.”

Crime & Justice comes to Showmax and CANAL+ in 2021.

‘One Night Kwa Mxolisi’ – 10 Interesting Facts

Hot trivia about the making of the movie.

Published

on

Following its parallel premiere on Mzansi Magic and Showmax, One Night Kwa Mxolisi has garnered its fair share of interest. And the South African film, which is part of four original local movies dropping on DStv through 2021, has unveiled some secrets about the project, its cast and producers.

Starring Sisanda Henna (who also directs the film), Donovan Goliath, Linda Mtoba and SAFTA award-winning actor Motlatsi Mofatsi amongst others, the plot follows a once semi-successful rugby player who invites his friends to the opening of his new restaurant. But after one too many drinks, truth-bombs are thrown and friendships get tested.

From left to right: Hanniel, One Night kwa Mxolisi Director Sisanda, Micaiah (the actor who plays Olly)

From the film being initially named something else, to the time it took to make, here are some unknown gems about the making of One Night Kwa Mxolisi that you should know:

  1. The movie was initially titled Good Boys and was commissioned as a KykNET movie.
  2. Written by Marvin Lee Beaukers and Johan Cronje, the film took a year to write, while  filming took only two weeks as the film was  shot in one location.
  3. Sisanda’s first-born son Micaiah Henna is in the film and plays the role of son Olwethu aka Olly. He does have some scenes he shares with Sisanda.
  4. Post-production editor for the film Kagiso Latane acted as a stand-in while Sisanda filmed his acting scenes, and to avoid confusion, he would wear a shirt similar to Sisanda’s for continuity.
  5. For talent casting, Sisanda Henna and casting director Ayanda Makayi held screen and chemistry tests to secure the stellar cast featured in the movie. Sisanda had the vision in terms of the type of characters, and Ayanda brought the vision to life.
  6. The film was shot in 27 Boxes in Melville, which was closed due to Covid-19. The concept of the restaurant, M.X.O’s on 4th is based on Henna’s brother’s bistro, Blaque in Bryanston.  The original restaurant in the movie is set in Parkhurst on 4th but the script was adjusted to also reflect it as being in Melville.
  7. Ant’s (Donovan Goliath) rap went off script and was kept in the movie. Donovan wrote the lyrics himself.
  8. The leading character’s name was meant to be Siya…yes, inspired by Siya Kolisi.
  9. This is Donovan Goliath’s debut as an actor in a film.
  10. The couple Funi (Fulu Mugovhani) and Brian’s (Nyaniso Dzedze) are inspired by SA’s power couple, Zam and Khensani Nkosi.

One Night Kwa Mxolisi features the likes of Linda Mtoba, Fulu Mgovhani and Buhle Samuels

Nonku & Ayanda’s Messy Rivalry on Real Housewives of Durban

The tension!

Published

on

The first few episodes of the Real Housewives of Durban have already given us enough shade, tea and material to declare the debut season of the Durban edition a major hit. The girlies didn’t come to play, and the latest episode proves just quickly those designer gloves can come off chile.

Nonku and Ayanda Ncwane’s ongoing frenemy dynamic is as interesting as it is explosive.

One second they are having an intense chat about Ayanda’s late husband, a legendary gospel singer fathering a child with Nonku, in the presence of all the girls. The next thing they agree that the past is better left where it is.

Seconds later, they are reading each other for filth. A mess! And it looks to be only getting more intense.

As Machonco said, one of these ladies isn’t being genuine. Of course, the viewers know by now that they are shading each other during the confessionals and dragging each other behind her back. Both of them never mince their words either. Yet they insist, let bygones be bygones. Explain that pettiness to me as you would to a 5-year-old. Take your time.

In the latest episode of the reality show, both Kgomotso and Nonku threw parties for their respective ventures. While Kgomotso’s event went rather smooth, except for that awkward speech, Nonku’s one was hit by many technical issues.

“It was a flop, yes”, she later lamented during a diary session. As if that was not bad enough, did the ladies not deal with her?

Instead of supporting Nonku’s imperfect wine brand launch, they gave her the hardest time. The ladies critiqued everything from the event setup, to the presentation and something about the “energy” being off. “I don’t know, maybe it’s because this event is at night”, Maconco later shaded.

It’s clear by now that the tension between Ayanda and Nonku will continue to play a big role in the alliances this season. They are both giving us Queen B vibes, rallying up new factions amongst the girls to split the entire Durban in half.

This is getting interesting by the minute.

Real Housewives of Durban premieres new episodes every Friday on Showmax.

‘Temptation Island South Africa’ is Coming

And you can be part of it.

Published

on

Showmax on Wednesday announced that they had secured their first license for an international reality TV format. Already popular as a reality television franchise across several countries around the world, Temptation Island will be getting its own South African spin.

Having recently launched a slew of local reality shows, including Real Housewives of Durban, Somhale Wedding, The Life of Kelly Khumalo and Lebo M’s reality show, the streaming service expand on this catalogue with an international format with a local spin. Temptation Island South Africa has entered the chat.

The ultimate relationship test, Temptation Island follows four couples at a pivotal time in their relationship, where they must mutually decide if they are ready to commit to one another for the rest of their lives — or go their separate ways.

Together, the couples experience the ultimate holiday in paradise, where they join single men and women, all looking for love. There, they live the “single life,” in a test that is meant to help answer their most difficult questions about their relationship.

What’s more, couples and singles who want to take part in the show can now ENTER.

Distributed by Banijay Rights, the global distribution arm of Banijay, Temptation Island is a Teen Choice-nominated pop culture phenomenon, which has been adapted 25 times and counting.

Temptation Island South Africa is going to be must-watch and must-tweet TV,” says Candice Fangueiro, Showmax’s head of content. “South Africans love reality TV; The Real Housewives of Durban recently set the record for the most first-day views on Showmax ever. Our audience has already devoured the first two seasons of Temptation Island USA so we’re confident there’s an appetite for more, especially when we add some uniquely South African spice.”

Afrokaans Film & Television (Survivor SA) is producing the 12-episode Showmax Original, which is expected to premiere in the first half of 2021.
