A First Look at the Trailer for ‘Riding With Sugar’

A dream shattered.

Published

on

Netflix recently released the trailer for Riding With Sugar. And if it is anything to go by, South Africans will be left inspired this holiday season.

The story of Riding With Sugar is one of triumph and hope in the face of adversity. Written and directed by Cannes Lions Gold winner, Sunu Gonera and produced by iconic film stalwart Helena Spring, the uniquely African story is a coming-of-age, feel-good ride about a young refugee’s quest for BMX glory.

The storyline of this YA film encompasses all of the emotion attached to competing in a  competitive sport as well as finding belonging, discovering love and the pursuit of happiness and triumph.

The Afrofuturistic feature film, seventeen years in the making, premieres on Netflix, on 27 November 2020.

Riding With Sugar boasts a celebrated cast that includes Hakeem Kae-Kazim (Black SailsPirates of the CaribbeanX-MenHotel Rwanda), alongside breakout stars Charles Mnene (The BillHolby CityDoctorsAhead of the Class) and Simona Brown (Guilt, the Roots remakeand Him).

WHAT IT’S ABOUT

Once a student with a great future, refugee Joshua dreams of winning a cycling championship as a means to finding a better life, but fate intervenes in the form of an accident that shatters his dream.

He is given shelter and a job by Mambo who houses refugee teenagers from all over Africa. When Joshua meets Olivia, a talented young dancer from a well-to-do family, it brings him into a world he has never known before, but her insights cast a shadow over Mambo’s agenda.

‘Fatman’ in Cinemas on December 4th

A dark and funny twist to Santa

Published

on

The plot for the movie sounded weird enough when we first heard about it. Depending on the writing, that can only be a good thing. The trailer for Fatman, starring Mel Gibson, Walton Goggings, Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Chance Hurstfield, has landed. And I’m still rather keen.

SYNOPSIS:

Spoiled, rich kid, 12-year-old, Billy Wenan lives with his ailing grandmother and pines for attention from his absentee father. He rules the house with an iron fist and shows no remorse when being cruel to the hired help. On Christmas morning, after receiving a lump of coal in his stocking, Billy decides to hire a hitman, known only as Skinny Man, to kill Santa.

Santa, also known as Chris Cringle, is in the middle of a financial struggle. The rising number of naughty has caused his government subsidy to slide below his current budget. Working along-side his faithful and pragmatic wife, Ruth, together, they fight to keep the lights on in the workshop and the elves employed. Reaching the end of their rope, they’re forced to enter a two-month contract with the U.S. military.

As Skinny Man makes his way toward Chris, we realize he harbours a twisted personal vendetta of his own. And when their two worlds collide, Chris must rise to the occasion to keep the Christmas spirit – and himself – alive.

The Joburg Film Festival Adapts to the New Norm

Inside the 2020 edition.

Published

on

Joburg Film Festival

The creative industry was just as struck down by the pandemic as other industries, so the absence of major festivals, award shows and other music events left us with a gap year.

Having to adapt to the new norm, however, organisers of the annual Joburg Festival, in association with their partners NFVF and GFC have announced that the 2020 edition of the festival will be staged as a two-day event later in November.

The Joburg Film Festival, which is typically held in the last week of November as a six-day festival, will now take place on 28 and 29 November with a limited film selection with a huge focus on development workshops.

Joburg Film Festival 2019

Kay Sibiya and Judie Sbahle Kama at the Joburg Film Festival launch at the Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton.

The festival is anchored by three main pillars which drive and direct all activities and engagements related to the delivery of the festival. These three pillars are the Film Programme, the Industry Programme and the Youth & Audience Development Programme.

Limited Film Programme

This year three specially curated films will be featured and celebrated at a local cinema over the two days of the 2020 installment, with an opportunity for the general public to attend the screenings of these films.

The focus of the 2020 targeted films places the spotlight on “displacement”, an apt theme during the global pandemic.

With the huge impact of COVID19 globally, the pandemic has amplified bullying, harassment and murder across the African continent. Whilst the films may not address these issues directly, they do explore the lives of people who are marginalized, some by choice and others by circumstances they find themselves in, which motivates their decision to find a new place to call home.

The Joburg Film Fest opening film ‘This is Not A Burial It’s a Resurrection’ features the late legendary Joburg born actress Mary Twala just prior to it’s Oscar run post the festival.

Making it’s global screening debut at the Joburg Film Fest this year, LGBTI film ’There’s Power In the Collar’ will also be shown over the festival.  The last addition to this year’s schedule includes Canadian / South Africa film ‘Beyond Moving’.

Film 1:             This is Not A Burial It’s A Resurrection (OPENING FILM)
Director:         Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese
Country:         South Africa
Duration:        120 minutes
Year:               2019

Amongst the pythonic mountains of landlocked Lesotho, an 80 year old widow winds up her earthly affairs, makes arrangements for her burial and prepares to die.

But when her village is threatened with forced resettlement due to the construction of a reservoir, she finds a new will to live and ignites a collective spirit of defiance within her community.

In the final dramatic moments of her life, Mantoa’s legend is forged and made eternal.

Film 2:             There’s Power In the Collar
Director:         Lodi Matsetela and Vincent Moloi
Country:         Botswana
Duration:        175 minutes
Year:               2020

As Botswana awaits a possible landmark judgement from its high court, seeking to decriminalize same sex relations, Chantel, a 27 year old lesbian who’s both a theologian and a queer rights activist, attempts to start her journey to get ordained as a reverend in Botswana’s religiously conservative and homophobic society.

Film 3:             Beyond Moving
Director:         Vikram Dasgupta
Country:         Canada/South Africa
Duration:        84 minutes
Year:               2019

“Beyond Moving is a heartbreaking tale of the things we sacrifice for art”.

When young Siphe November leaves his small township in South Africa to follow his dreams at Canada’s National Ballet School, he begins a remarkable journey that reveals deeply personal pulses of family, prejudice, expectation, loss, and resilience that beat beneath the surface of a beautiful and demanding art form.

Screenings will be held at Cinema Nouveau in the Rosebank Mall and the Bioscope at 22 Stanley in Milpark. Limited tickets will be sold at the door of each of the respective venues.

Youth & Audience Development Programme

The Youth and Audience Development programme is a skill sharing platform that affords young aspiring filmmakers the opportunity to learn from and engage with industry professionals, hosted in partnership with the Gauteng Film Commission (GFC) and the National Film & Video Foundation (NFVF).

Due to the pandemic, the programme will be delivered as well structured one-day workshop that incorporates the province’s youth from different regions at a central location and is also recorded for virtual streaming and broadcast.

Black youth who are students or aspirant filmmakers between the ages of 18 and 30 years with a matric or an alternative equivalent as a minimum participating criterion will be selected for the workshop.

Twenty youth from each of the 5 of Gauteng’s regions will be selected to attend the physical one-day workshop on Saturday 28 November that will be held at the Lesedi Theatre @ Joburg Theatre, bringing the total attendees and participants to 100/150 pax.

The 5 regions have been identified as:

  • Ekurhuleni
  • Mogale City
  • Sedibeng
  • Tshwane
  • City of Joburg

Interested participants can send their details (full name and age) to either of the contact details below:

Whatsapp line:   067 770 1574

Email:                    info@joburgfilmfestival.co.za

The workshop will be screened and made available via the JFF website post the event to reach and impact an even broader audience than the one that attended physically.

Sadly the Industry Programme will not take place this year due to COVID19 travel restrictions.

“The focus of the 2020 festival will be on the third pillar of the festival which emphasizes JFF’s commitment to developing, empowering and skilling the youth whilst contributing to the development of the cinema culture and growing audience appreciation for local films”, stated Joburg Film Festival Executive Director Tim Mangwedi. We are also extremely honoured to be opening the festival this year with film This is Not A Burial It’s A Resurrection’ finally giving the Joburg audience a chance to catch this brilliant cinematic work on the big screen”.

Africa Rising Film Festival Goes Virtual For 2020 Edition

Themes include GBV and Black Lives Matter this year.

Published

on

Much like other events in the creative space and elsewhere, this year’s Africa Rising International Film Festival will be hosting its 3rd instalment virtually. This year’s festival is scheduled to run from November 27th through 29th.

The virtual edition will include a couple of live experiences. With ARIFF’s mission centred around using film to create awareness and contribute urgent conversations, the festival will be highlighting gender-based violence and Black Lives Matter as part of tackling unjust systems and discourses that underlie the plight of so many.

ARIFF will develop and screen 16 short films and documentaries under the 2020 theme its gender-based violence and equality project dubbed the ARIFF Film for Change: GBV and Equality.

In a press statement seen by QuenchSA, the festival has expressed that the ” main objective of the project is to drive conversation, raise awareness of gender-based violence and equality through the power of cinema and storytelling to push for real change and accountability.”

The short films and documentaries will form part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children Abuse. The program will also be integrated to the Africa Rising International Film Festival’s training program ARIFF Film Institute where ARIFF mentors over 200 young creatives through Directing, Producing, Scriptwriting, Acting, and technical and creative aspect of filmmaking.

Women, youth, queer community, and people living with disabilities will continue to take centre stage at this year’s Festival.  As we celebrate their work, we also bring attention to the importance of continuing to support these groups in the film industry, to ensure these moments of celebration keep happening. Thematically as ARIFF we want to ensure that all voices left in the shadows are given a spotlight. We are excited about this instalment of the festival as we tackle difficult conversations that continue to erode our society. We will honour those who have lost their lives to both GBV and COVID19 – Lala Tuku

The commissioning process opened on Thursday, 05th November 2020, for emerging Filmmakers, with Scriptwriters and Directors from previously disadvantaged backgrounds within the ages of 18 to 35 with a filmmaking qualification or a year’s worth of directing experience also invited to participate in the development process. Experienced mentors will oversee the commissioned work while also mentoring and upskilling the participants.

The year 2020 will never be forgotten, we have had to all adjust and introspect on what is crucial. As a festival we have had to assess and evaluate how we engage with audiences leading from supporting purpose led content and initiatives. During this time we have explored the lengths of the digital space which has brought the world closer, with Film for Change we will share meaningful content to be seen beyond our borders using digital platforms – Ayanda Sithebe.

The three-day Africa Rising International Film Festival’s 2020 virtual edition programme also includes African and international film screenings/premiers, Round Tables, Masterclasses, SWIFT Hour, ARIFF Film Child, and more. The full African and International film screenings programme will be released closer to the time.
