SAMA26 Lifetime Achievement & International Achievement Award Announced

SA Legends get their flowers!

Published

bishop Benjamin Dube

The build-up to the SAMA26 is underway and the most recent update released was the announcement of the Lifetime Achievement Awards and the International Achievement Award recipients. Bishop Benjamin Dube will be honoured for his spiritual stewardship in the gospel industry and the late Dan Tshanda will be honoured posthumously for his great run in the 1980s.

Bishop Benjamin Dube’s numbers are bar none. With hits such as Holy Spirit selling over 25 000 units and his live album I Feel Like Going On that went platinum, his legend is unquestionable. Having won the SAMA award before, it is fitting to bestow the award to the gospel artist.

Another recipient that made his mark in the South African music industry was the Soweto-born producer Dan Tshanda. Dan dominated the 1980s bubblegum pop scene with his production prowess. He rose to national stardom with his group Splash following the release of their 1986 classic album Peacock.

Ndlovu Youth Choir

This year’s International Achiever Award recipient is Ndlovu Youth Choir from Limpopo. Their performances on the reality talent search show America’s Got Talent took them to the final round and captured the hearts and minds of viewers around the world. They have since been signed by Sony Music in partnership with Syco Entertainment, headed by British entertainment mogul Simon Cowell.

The choir’s debut album was released in November 2019 and delivers their signature songs that took the choir from the village of Moutse to the heights and hearts of American showbiz. The voices of Ndlovu Youth Choir have emerged as proud ambassadors for a united South Africa.

Don’t miss the five day SAMA26 spectacular streamed live on the My Muze by Vodacom platform and broadcast on Mzansi Magic, DStv channel 161 from the 3-7 August at 21:30.

Published

on

Dineo Langa

The 26th edition of South African Music Awards will be hosted by Dineo Langa and Donovan Goliath.

Langa is no stranger to the presenting role, having held down the fort on Vuzu. The talented and glamorous actress, will add her name to an illustrious list of hosts of the SAMAs such as Thando Thabethe and Tumi Morake. Dineo’s résumé speaks for itself, she has been seen on South Africa’s most notable telenovelas and soapies.

She was also a leading lady in the blockbuster Mrs Right Guy. With an ever growing career, she has proven time and time again why she is a dependable face to host events of such grand stature.

Goliath is a seasoned MC and comedian. He is an expert in delivering master classes on marketing, design and creativity. He shot to TV stardom as a host of Real Goboza. He is a part of the award winning entertainment brand GOLIATH AND GOLIATH.

RiSA announced this month that the annual SAMA will stage its 26th edition over five nights, from 3 to 7 August 2020 at 21:30. In accordance with the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown and social distancing norms, the party has moved from the Sun City Superbowl to be streamed on the My Muze by Vodacom platform and broadcast on Mzansi Magic, DStv channel 161.

Donald Goliath

Langa remarked: ‘When putting together a list of award shows one would like to host someday, the SAMAs are definitely at the top. I’m extremely excited to be a part of the SAMA and to experience the magic of new beginnings for South Africa’s top music awards show.’

Master KG, Makhadzi and Other Shocking SAMA 2020 Snubs!

Aowah.

Published

on

Makhadzi
Photo: Oupa Bopape

Despite delivering some of the biggest projects in 2019, Master KG and Makhadzi have found themselves without nominations at the looming 26th annual SAMAs.

With ‘Jerusalema’ and ‘Matorokisi’ respectively, both artists not only managed to bang out some of the biggest street anthems that echoed throughout the land, but also really declared that it’s Limpopo’s turn to devour culture.

The same can be said about Sho Madjozi’s John Cena.

These singles have the streams, digital sales, Youtube views and continental success to back up their felt impact. Jerusalema saw such a massive wave of success throughout Africa, particularly in Nigeria, that the remix with Burna Boy propelled the song at the top of the charts more than a year after it dominated the airwaves.

The Jerusalema music video has now reached 43 million views on Youtube, another stat that places it as the biggest international breakout hit from Southy within past year.

Makhadzi reacted with bucket loads of grace to the snub, congratulating the nominees.

Nadia Nakai’s Nadia Naked also didn’t make the cut for Hip Hop album, shaking Cassper Nyovest in his studio and starting a whole debate about award shows and their credibility.

As did Lawd Porry, who didn’t mince a word.

Ayanda Jiya gifted the landscape with one of the most critically lauded albums. Ayandastand melts the ingredients of sonic brilliance, vocal mastery, and superior songwriting to give us 11 flawless love-soaked melodies in the lush projects. I personally thought the Jiya’s work would be greatly recognized at this year’s show because she really snapped. However, she too found herself outside the Best R&B album nod.

She flipped. As did we.

That said, we are thrilled to see a slew of new names who killed it getting their nods. Ami Faku came and conquered. She deserves. So did Msaki!
