Brenda Mhlongo To Debut on ‘Imbewu’ As The New ‘KaMadonsela’

Filming in KZN is a full-circle moment for her.

Brenda Mhlongo has joined the cast of popular eTV soapie, Imbewu. As reports surfaced earlier this year, the announcement by the channel has confirmed that the KZN native will be taking over the ropes from Fundiswa Zwane to portray the character of KaMadonsela.

Mhlongo, who’s work is most noted for her portrayal of Rafiki on the Broadway smash-hit The Lion King. will be looking to ace the delivery of ‘KaMadonsela’s multi-layered character.

Viewers of the show will know that the role has required serious acting chops from Zwane. KaMadonsela must often flip between displays of expressive vulnerability and traditionalist sense of principle. All done with comic timing whenever the scenes call for some.

Brenda though cannot wait to take over and woo over the 3 million daily viewers of the late-night drama. “I love being challenged with any role I have to play.”, she said in a press statement.

Adding, “She’s umam’umfundisi (Pastor’s wife), which is someone who would have completely different qualities to who I am in real life. To have the chance to experience that contrast and bring the character to life how I see fit has been quite the experience.”

The actress is also delighted that she will be based in her home province while working on Imbewu. “It’s been one of my dreams to work in my home province. In addition to working in Johannesburg, I’ve also worked overseas for years, so having this opportunity to come back to my city and be a little more settled is like a full-circle moment for me!”, she added.

Brenda Mhlongo will make her debut on Monday, July 27th at 21:30.
