BETs Africa New Drama Isono

BET Africa is launching a new original daily drama featuring some of the Mzansi’s household names in television. Pulling no punches, the new show co-produced by BET Africa and Clive Morris Productions drafted strong leads in Nthati Moshesh and Rami Chuene.

The enthralling exploits of the cast of Isono will entertain audiences from across the continent and it is set to take African storytelling to the rest of the world. This drama is another extension of BET Africa’s commitment towards fostering more local content that tells the story that viewers can relate to.

WHAT IS BET AFRICA ISONO ABOUT?

The daily drama is centered around a dysfunctional family and a heroic son that builds up enough courage to stand up against the powerful and evil matriarch who will stop at nothing to get what she wants.

Like any family unit void of love for one another and mutual respect, the power dynamics between mother and child manifest themselves in anger and resentment. You will get front-row seats to the forces at play when a mother stops at nothing to succeed.

WHO’S ON BET AFRICA ISONO (THE SIN)

The protagonist on the show is Nthati Moshesh, who bares the cross of the antihero. She plays the role of the ruthless Mary, granting viewers a closer look at her range as an actress. The last time she was on screen was her portrayal of the leader of a cult MaSabatha on season 5 of LockDown.

Rami Chuene became an extension of Mzansi Magic’s The Queen. Her departure from the telenovela left her fans baying for blood. You will have a tough time reconciling her character as TGOM with the new role.

She plays the eccentric role of Jumima aka Juju, a gossipmonger who often buys into occasional conspiracy theories and gets the wrong end of the stick by making odd connections and pronouncements.

The supporting cast includes Senzo Radebe and Bohang Moeko, who provide the youthful exuberance to the storyline. Other notable mentions include Natasha Thahane who is fresh from the success of the Netflix original Blood and Water, Tokollo ‘TK’ Sebothoma, Didintle Khunou and Zolisa Xaluva. The show will be missing the talents of Ntando Duma, who opted to join The Queen.

Catch the premier of the BET Africa daily drama on DStv channel 129 on 27 July at 9.30pm CAT.

First Look at New Showmax Thriller with Pallance Dladla & Lea Vivier

It’s the story of a family – and a town – with dark secrets

Published

on

There’s already a couple of original South African series lined-up to premiere on Showmax in 2021. And the filming of ‘Dam’, a small-town psychological thriller shot in the Eastern Cape, has just wrapped.

Lea Vivier stars in ‘Dam’, set to premiere on Showmax in 2021.

THE PLOT

‘Silwerskerm’ Best Actress winner Lea Vivier (WonderlusFynskrif) stars as Yola Fischer, who returns from Chile to the Eastern Cape to bury her father, only to be tormented by spirits in the farmhouse she has inherited. But with her mother institutionalised, and her own meds running out, Yola has to wonder if the spirits are real or just in her head?

Two-time South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) winner Pallance Dladla (ShadowIsibaya) co-stars as Themba, her love interest, a biker on the run.

Natasha Loring (who’s voiced game characters in both the Star Wars and Game of Thrones franchises, and starred in international series like Beaver Falls) plays Yola’s sister, Sienna; SAFTA winner Antoinette Louw (An Act of DefianceDie Laaste Tango) plays her aunt Dora; and Fleur du Cap winner Faniswa Yisa (Blood Psalms, Knuckle City and Skin) is Lindiwe; with aKing frontman Laudo Liebenberg (Black SailsDie Byl) and Gerald Steyn (Meisies Wat Fluit, Fiela Se Kind) as brothers Rudy and Max Reese.

“It’s the story of a family – and a town – with dark secrets, and about how what you push down will eventually rise up,” says Alex Yazbek (The WildUnmarried, Isibaya), a four-time SAFTA winner who is writing and directing the eight-part series.

Neil Sandilands returned from Hollywood for the series – his first South African role since 2013’s Die Ballade Van Robbie De Wee. Since then, Sandilands has appeared in hit shows like The FlashThe 100The Americans and Hap and Leonard, as well as films like Paul Greengrass’s News of the World, opposite Tom Hanks.

Dam’s all-star cast also includes Jennifer Steyn (Goodbye BafanaAbo Mzala, Master Harold and the Boys) as Yola’s mother, Yvette, and theatre legend Andrew Buckland (Catching Feelings) as her father, Jacob.

Siv Ngesi (Blood PsalmsStill Breathing, Knuckle City), Thembisa Mdoda-Nxumalo (Baby MamasUnmarriedOur Perfect Wedding), Tarryn Wyngaard (Noem My SkollieRaised by WolvesDwaalster) and Andre Odendaal (SwartwaterDwaalster). There’s also Marvin Lee Beukes (Die Byl), David James (District 9, Isidingo), and Francis Chouler, who is making his local TV series debut after more than 20 international roles in the likes of Eye in the Sky and Prisoner 760.

Picture Tree (Vehicle 19) are producing the series with Tom Marais (Hunter Killer, iNumber Number) as DOP; Sue Steele (MaterialVehicle 19) as production designer, creating things like frog-covered floors; award-winning model maker Roger Titley creating barbel fish-headed monsters; and SAFTA winner Smartie Olifant (IntersexionsThe Wound) overseeing makeup, including a trypophobia-inducing skin disorder.

“It’s safe to say you’ve never seen anything like Dam on South African TV,” says Candice Fanguiero, Showmax’s head of content.

Dam premieres on Showmax in February 2021.

Local Netflix Drama ‘Kings of Joburg’ Trailer, Dates, Cast, Plot & More

The Fergusons join forces with Netflix for the gritty drama series.

Published

Kings of Joburg Netflix

The cat is finally out of the bag, you all! The highly buzzed Kings of Joburg drama series is slated for a festive season premiere on Netflix.

Slated to land on the video streaming platform on December 4th, the show marks Netflix’s first partnership with the first family of Mzansi television, the Fergusons, who have worked alongside Samad Davis of US-based Visionary Media Inc.

Kings of Joburg Netflix

The official trailer made its debut on Wednesday, giving locals a glimpse of what they can expect on the looming crime drama.

‘KINGS OF JOBURG’ SYNOPSIS

The thriller finds loyalties being put on the test under the gritty, concentrated populous of the crime-ridden streets of the city of Johannesburg, unravels another first for local audiences, a palpable action-drama series with a layer of dark fantasy and a sinister aspect of the African occult.

Shona Ferguson portrays the character of a certain Simon “Vader” Masire, a member of the KOJ brotherhood and the eldest of the Masire siblings. As a smoother and charming brother, prolific businessman Simon leads the family business.

However, under the lavish suits and ties is a man hiding a deep dark secret. Zolisa Xaluva portrays the role of Mogomotsi “Mo” Masire, Simon’s young brother and an ex-convict who finds himself having to choose between the life that got him in jail, and honouring his responsibilities to the legacy of a crime family and older brother he loves.

Joining the ensemble cast is TK Sebothoma as the spoilt and privileged Tlotlo Masire, Buhle Samuels as the gorgeous and supportive wife to Simon, Angela Masire, and Tsholofelo Matshaba as the straight-talking detective who’s obsessed with bringing down the Kings of Joburg. Adding to the impressive cast is SK Khoza as Cyrus, Abdul Khoza as Lester, Nnekwa Tsajwa as Sting and Cindy Mahlangu as Phumzi.

Executive producer, Shona Ferguson, speaks on this first-time partnership with Netflix. “When I created KINGS OF JOBURG I wanted to root the show in elements of love, family, conflict and power.

The premise of the series is centred around the question, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” and this narrative is explored in all 6 episodes. The mystical and thriller side of the story is inspired by the folk tales that I grew up learning about from my late father, Peter Harry Ferguson.

Kings of Joburg Netflix

These stories kept me up at night and gave me nightmares but I had to bring them to life in a tale of human conflict. Audiences will be surprised to learn that despite the darkness of this story,  Kings of Joburg, paints a beautiful picture of the city of Johannesburg. I am also grateful to have worked with such an amazing cast and crew who gave it their all and helped bring my vision to life. ‘’

Connie Ferguson adds, “We’re living in exciting times where the world is becoming smaller and smaller. What used to be out of reach is now a stone throw away! With Kings Of Joburg, we are taking South Africa and Africa to the world and bringing the world to South Africa. It’s a United States Of The World show, bringing together talent from America and the continent! It was an honour to work with Netflix to bring to life this passion project we are truly proud of. ”

“Working between Hollywood and across Africa over the decades, I’ve been able to see first hand the enormous influence and impact Hollywood has had on the hearts and minds of people across Africa. I am honored to be part of Kings of Joburg because through it and through our partnership with Netflix, we are providing African talent, both in front of the camera and behind it, the opportunity to be a part of their own ‘Hollywood’ production’’, says Samad Davis

On adding Kings Of Joburg to Netflix’s slate of licenced series, Director of Licensing and Co-Productions in Africa, Ben Amadasun said, “We couldn’t be more excited about our partnership with The Fergusons that has enabled them to expand the execution of their vision and showcase the best of Mzansi talent to a global audience.

At Netflix, we continuously look for opportunities to create long-term partnerships with the best production partners in South Africa and beyond, as part of our ongoing efforts to bring a diversity of best-in-class african stories, across every genre.”

The 6-part series delves into legacy building, fragmented family structures, treacherous brotherhoods and the effects of crime and African masculinities on families and society at large. Loyalties will be tested, with long held secrets threatening to shatter the fragile facade.

Published

Besides Black Friday, not much is attached to November. Except maybe being the month for the final push at work and the braais. But there is still loads of binge-worthy content to stream, which should make the ride to December that much more fun.

Netflix looks to kick off the festive cheer with a bunch of new stuff for you to watch, and there’s some really good ones in there.

Here’s what you can look forward to;

It’s finally here… season 4 of The Crown will be hitting your screen this month and this season will be giving us an inside look into the life of Queen Elizabeth during the 1980’s.

From the imagination of writer-director David E. Talbert and featuring original songs by John Legend, Philip Lawrence, and Davy Nathan, Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey reminds us of the strength of family and the power of possibility.
