Queen Sono

Fans will be thrilled to learn that Netflix has announced a second season of Queen Sono.

The series, which is the streaming platform’s first ever African original series, premiered in 2019 to much fanfare.

The looming season of the six part series, starring Pearl Thusi in the lead role, will chronicle Queen’s pursuit of the truth as her raging need for revenge takes her on a mission across Africa. All while she deals with her family’s past and her complicated love life.

Pearl Thusi, Vuyo Dabula, Sechaba Morojele, Chi Mhende, Loyiso Madinga, Rob Van Vuuren, Kate Liquorish, Khathu Ramabulana and Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa are all expected to return for the highly anticipated season 2.

Returning Showrunner and Director Kagiso Lediga commented “I am so excited by the appetite for African stories and that Netflix is continuing to partner with us to bring to life the next chapter of Queen’s story and showcase it to the world”

Dorothy Ghettuba who leads African Original Series at Netflix commented: “The first season of Queen Sono marked the beginning of our journey to introduce the world to exciting stories that are made in Africa. It was an unprecedented representation of a strong female black lead in African television.

In the first season of Queen Sono, we saw grit and glamour, strength and vulnerability, as well as the past and the present, converge into a powerful narrative that explored the complexities and nuances of the African experience.

Kagiso Lediga and the Diprente team delivered a compelling story that resonated with our viewers and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for Queen Sono in this coming season.”

Diprente will return as the production team behind season 2 and are expected to begin production later this year. Executive Producer, Tamsin Andersson comments, “We are thrilled to continue our production of Queen Sono season 2 with Netflix. The hard work from season 1 paid off and we’re excited that the brand is investing further in the growth of our local production team.’’

Netflix will soon debut another African original globally, Blood & Water – a young adult drama series set in Cape Town, South Africa.

The company also previously announced its first Nigerian original series by acclaimed Nigerian director, Akin Omotoso as well as an animated project, Mama K’s Team Four which will form part of Netflix’s wide range of diverse, quality entertainment made in Africa to be enjoyed by members around the world.

Inside ‘BBNaija’ Winner Laycon’s Showmax Series

That Big Brother Naija bag keeps on giving.

Published

on

Big Brother Naija winner Laycon will be making a return to our screens in 2021.

The famed Big Brother Naija season 5 winner Lekan Agbeleshe aka Laycon, will be appearing in a first-ever Showmax Nigerian Original. Entitled I Am LAYCON, the feature will premiere on the streaming platform in February 2021.

Coming from humble beginnings, the 26-year-old musician and philosophy graduate had to hustle his way through life before landing a spot in Biggie’s house, where he wormed his way into the hearts of fans across the continent with his wit and lyrical genius.

Laycon beat 19 other housemates on 27 September 2020 to emerge winner of BBNaija S5, winning 85 million Naira worth of cash prizes. Following his BBNaija triumph, Laycon already has 2.4m followers and growing. He is now working on his first album.

Fans of BBNaija and lovers of exciting reality TV are invited to follow Laycon on his journey after BBNaija, as he settles into life as a star with his own reality TV show, while juggling his personal relationships and growing music career in one of Africa’s biggest cities, Lagos. Will he achieve his ambition to blow?

“I am excited to continue my new life journey and embrace the new responsibilities of evolving not just myself but everyone around me,” says Laycon. “I want you to come along for the ride as you get to see the growth that you have supported and loved.”

Last week, Laycon continued with his winning streak, landing a brand ambassadorship deal with GOtv.

Other upcoming Showmax Originals include Jahmil X.T. Qubeka’s ancient Africa series Blood Psalms, a co-production with Canal+ International, and Uthando Lodumo, a reality series about South Africa’s gqom queen Babes Wodumo and her fiancé, Mampintsha, all expected in 2021.

Cape Town Duo Debut New Cartoon Network Series

Well, this should be fun!

Published

on

Life’s challenging and unusual times demand a little bit of laughter, well, maybe some ROFL!

That’s what Cartoon Network Africa’s new original production, CN to the Rescue, is here for. Available from the 14th of November on Cartoon Network Africa’s YouTube channel, the show is set to keep audiences laughing uncontrollably with pure African humour and fresh, imaginative content relating to everyday situations in the African household with a multitude of characters representative of the true African family.

What would the world be without inja ye game, our hero and cool brother, Tapiwe Lembwa, who is fun-loving and creative – and did we mention, Cartoon Network’s greatest fan in all of Africa?

With the help of his cartoon chommies, and visits to his ‘Imagination Room’ filled with archives of his favourite Cartoon Network episodes, he solves daily household mshikashika in a surprising and imaginative way.

However, with a no-nonsense slay queen of a mother, intensely focused bra, Garcia, who always gets drawn into Taps’s schemes, and a quiet, but wakker Gogo, no day – or episode – is without its twists and hilarious fun!!

Wacky ‘slap-chic’ African comedian, André Lembwa, brings CN to the Rescue to life.  Born in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), before moving to South Africa, Lembwa’s primarily known for his impersonations of diverse nationalities, from Congolese, Nigerian, to South African and beyond. In 2019, André met Capetonian filmmaker, Howard James Fyvie, and next thing they knew – CN to the Rescue was born!

“I am ecstatic to be part of CN to the Rescue on Cartoon Network Africa’s YouTube channel,” says Lembwa. “This collaboration is an all-new format that combines the power of Cartoon Network with the clever use of local comedy and humour. I know that young audiences and families across Africa rate Cartoon Network, and I know they will enjoy the crossover of their favourite channel with their soon to be favourite family – The Lembwas!”

And no, you are not seeing double! Lembwa plays the central character, Tapiwe (aka Taps), and all three family members, the nerdy younger brother, Garcia, their glam mom, Lyzette, and of course the happy-go-lucky Gogo. With remarkably distinct characteristics for each new character, it can be easy to forget just how many roles Lembwa takes on in the series.

This quintessentially African show, primarily targeting 8-14-year-olds, further demonstrates Cartoon Network’s commitment to scaling up and sustaining the quality of local kids’ fun and imaginative entertainment.

The series will consist of seven episodes of seven to nine minutes long, launching weekly from Saturday, 14 November through to Saturday, 19 December outside of the traditional linear ecosystem, exclusively on YouTube.

First Look at Showmax Original Lebo M – Coming Home

Watch the trailer of the reality show!

Published

on

Get set for a festive season like no other with Showmax South Africa. The first trailer for Lebo M – Coming Home  just dropped, and it will be available on the streaming service from 2 December 2020.

The trailer starts, like The Lion King, with Lebo M’s distinctive voice singing, “Nants’ Ingonyama,” from The Circle Of Life, off Hans Zimmer’s Oscar-winning soundtrack to the animated classic.

“I’ve worked with some of the biggest and greatest, most talented people in the world,” says Lebo M, who’s won a Grammy, been nominated for a Tony for his work on the highest-grossing Broadway production of all time, executive produced the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, had his songs streamed over 250 million times on Spotify alone, and won the 2020 DStv Mzansi Viewer’s Choice 1Life Legend Award.

But now, Lebo M says, “I’m re-entering a phase in my life as a family man… Family has always been the basis under which I function better.”

In the trailer, we see him throw a housewarming at his equestrian estate in Blair Athol, which he calls “our final home.” He shares the mansion with his 90-something mother; four of his children; and Angela Ngani-Casara, his third wife, who talks in the trailer of “a new era, a new dawn.”

But Lebo M also admits “the dysfunctionality of my family history,” which has seen him married three times, helping to raise nine children along the way, one of whom tragically passed away.

Lebo M Documentary

The tension with Tshepiso, his only surviving son, is particularly evident in the trailer. Tshepiso lives in Midrand and has just become a father himself, but Lebo admits in the trailer, “I’m in the worst relationship with my son that I’ve ever been, since he was born.”

But, as Lebo M says at the end of the trailer, “I’m ready to face the music.”

Lebo M – Coming Home is the debut reality series from Dopezuluboi Productions, founded by Teddy Geldart, who directed two seasons of Being Bonang and was executive producer of the SAFTA-winning Living The Dream With Somizi S4 and this year’s other hit reality show, Kwa Mam’Mkhize.

Lebo M – Coming Home is the third Original reality series this year from Showmax, after Somizi & Mohale: The Union broke the overall first-day viewing record on Showmax and Life With Kelly Khumalo became the fastest Showmax Original to top one million views.

Other upcoming Showmax Originals include Babes Wodumo and Mampintha’s reality series, Uthando Lodumo; the long-awaited second season of the SAFTA-winning comedy,Tali’s Wedding Diary; the nightclub-set murder mystery Skemerdans; and the small town psychological thriller Dam, all expected in early 2021.

The Showmax Original Lebo M – Coming Home is launching first on Showmax on 2 December 2020. Nants’ Ingonyama. Here comes a lion.
