Your Crash Course on Mthunzi’s Debut Album ‘Selimathunzi’

The singer has unleashed a mellow album that blends various sounds, including Maskandi and Afro-Pop

In New South African Music news, Hammersdale native Mthunzi has released his debut album, Selimathunzi. The 16 track project features collaborations with the likes of Ami Faku and Simmy.

With the success of De Mogul’s Ndiphelele, Sha Sha’s Tender Love and amongst a few fresh drops Sithelo’s Forever, 2020 is already shaping up to be the year of lush love songs.

And Mthunzi, who’s just premiered his debut album, is a refreshing addition to the landscape.

After the release of the singles ‘Vuka’ and ‘Insimbi X Sun-El Musician’ last year, which earned him a fast-growing following, the up and coming singer has debuted his first studio album.

Entitled ‘Selimathunzi, which translates to “sunset” in isiZulu, the 16 track offering finds Mthunzi lavishing mellow African and experimental sonics with tender vocals delivered in his native tongue.

Mthunzi Selimathunzi

The singer, who recently distilled his journey from KZN to Johannesburg in the quest for his musical dream on the ‘Massive Music’ TV show, says Africans must bring their authentic selves to the world stage.

“As Africans we must take pride in our heritage and we must present to the world our own style of music; singing in our own vernacular does just that,” says the new kid on the block. “I hope listeners will receive and appreciate my music without limitations.”

ALBUM REVIEW: SAMTHING SOWETO DAZZLES ON ‘ISPHITHIPHITHI’

A blend of Maskandi, House, Afro-pop and R&B, Selimathunzi features 16 tracks, which were penned by the artist with the support of a number of featured artists: Sun-El Musician, Simmy, Ami Faku, S-Tone, Sino Msolo and Claudio X Kenza.

Nine months in the making, the young singer says the album was inspired by music from around the world.

While Mthunzi describes each song as special, the one closest to his heart is Phondo Olukhulu, a song of appreciation dedicated to the El World Music family – he signed with El World Music in 2017.

He believes, however, that Ngibambe La, which boasts an exciting experimental sound, has great potential to be a hit.

The song, which became the first single from the album, is a mix of Pop and House. The song, says Mthunzi, is an expression of love. “Ngibambe La not only expresses love, but also states publicly that my girl is taken. With its slow tempo, it is an easy-listening song with a message that is very relatable,” he explains. “I am very grateful towards the El World Music team,” says Mthunzi, “as they assisted with the song selection and were instrumental in the arrangement of the songs on the album.”

According to the young singer, his biggest challenges over the course of compiling the album were operating at a faster than usual pace, and the pressure of working among acclaimed musicians.

The rising local star, who comes from Hammarsdale, a small town in KwaZulu-Natal, believes that music is a gift given to him by God. It was his mother who first discovered his gift and who encouraged him to develop it and share it with the world. “Music is my life. I have been perfecting my musical gift from a very young age, through playing various instruments and performing in my community. It has been a rollercoaster journey with many challenges, but I have persevered,” he says.

As he earns the respect of fellow artists and audiences across the country with his unique sound, Mthunzi happily shares his greatest life lesson – cast no judgement. “I was raised by my grandparents who instilled in me the value of showing respect to all, no matter who they are.”

This, along with his innate talent and work ethic, is set to propel the rising young star forward.

Sha Sha Releases Acoustic Version for ‘Tender Love’

The singer gave her dance banger some transcendental treatment.

South African Music News: Sha Sha is on Apple Music Artist Spotlight

Sha Sha is not slowing down, you all.

And fresh from premiering the music video for her love-soaked summer hit ‘Tender Love’, the songstress on Friday thrilled fans with an acoustic performance of the song. Now uploaded on Youtube to the pleasure of her fans, the recording took place at the Sony Music studios offices.

Spotting her trademark blonde box braids, the ‘Love You Tonight‘ hitmaker is clad in a yellow jumpsuit as she hovers sun-drenched vocals over an acoustic piano set.

RELATED: HOW SHA SHA BECAME THE ARTIST FOR DECEMBER

This is the first time that the 25 year old Zimbabwean native delivered a stripped down performance of her upbeat dance toons.

Taken from her 8-track EP, the critically lauded ‘Blossom’, Tender Love surged to the top of the charts during the summer of 2019. The project delivered a slew of popular tracks, many which fused Afrobeats, Pop, Soul and Amapiano.

Proving that her ascension to the forefront of the music industry will not be plunging into a downtrend anytime soon, the song has continued outperforming many of her contemporaries  on iTunes.

Rouge and AKA Unveil Artwork for Upcoming Single

Hip Hop lovers are in for a treat!

SA Hip Hop News: AKA and Rouge debut the artwork for their collaborative single, One By One

South African rappers Rouge and AKA on Friday debuted the official artwork for their looming project, their first collaborative joint.

SA Hip Hop News: AKA and Rouge debut the artwork for their collaborative single, One By One

The last time the two kind-of worked together was back in 2015, when Rouge appeared on the all-female-rapper remix of AKA’s Baddest.

Entitled One By One, the song is slated for release next week Friday, February 28th. The track is produced by Tweezy.

It’s unclear at this stage whether the song will appear on their upcoming respective albums, as both have promised fans to make good on their promises to avail full bodies of work in 2020.

RELATED: WHAT ROUGE SAID FOUR YEARS AGO IN THIS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW!

The song will come months after Rouge unleashed the visuals for her 2019 scorcher, Popular, featuring Emtee.

At the height of the song’s popularity, Rouge proclaimed herself as the best female rapper in South Africa, a statement which caught AKA’s attention.

He applauded her honesty at the time, and suggested that South African female rappers should abandon displays of sisterly solidarity and claim the throne. Beefs, as he would attest, tend to generate a lot of public interest.

AKA, on the other hand, just delivered something new for his fans. Earlier this week, the Fela in Versace hitmaker appeared alongside Costa Titch and Riky Rick on the music video for the Nkalakatha remix.

WATCH — The Inspiration Behind Ami Faku’s ‘Imali’ Revealed

Faku’s own life has given her plenty to write about.

Clearly Ami Faku is a girl after our own heart!

Just days after delivering sun-drenched vocals on ‘Uwrongo‘, the collaborative blockbuster offering that has seen her work with Prince Kaybee, Shimza and Black Motion, Faku has now explained the life experiences in which her hit, Imali, is rooted.

MUSIC NEWS: 5 NEW SA HOUSE SONGS YOU SHOULD PLAY RIGHT NOW!

As part of Apple Music Song Stories, a curated series which features South African artists taking us through the stories that inspired their songs, Imali is the latest feature. The song debuted in the Top 5 on Apple Music when it was released in September 2019.

The single was intensely personal for Ami: “Imali, is a reflection on the difficulties of life. I felt that I left people behind who were suffering and unable to afford the basics”, she shared. “People can relate to the fact that many people never get the break they need. However, I wanted it to be inspirational too.”

Faku – the Apple Music New Artist Spotlight recipient in October 2019 – first discovered her passion for singing as a child in the church where her father was a pastor.

She began to explore a range of styles from gospel and reggae to pop and hip-hop, gradually developing her own distinctive voice which incorporates her Xhosa heritage.

She’s most proud of the fact that the album “is honest” which is why the lyrics mean so much to her: “Thandazile Kuzolunga nini … I’ve been praying and nothing changes, nothing wonderful is happening. That’s when you have to do something.”
