Your Crash Course on Mthunzi’s Debut Album ‘Selimathunzi’

The singer has unleashed a mellow album that blends various sounds, including Maskandi and Afro-Pop

In New South African Music news, Hammersdale native Mthunzi has released his debut album, Selimathunzi. The 16 track project features collaborations with the likes of Ami Faku and Simmy.

With the success of De Mogul’s Ndiphelele, Sha Sha’s Tender Love and amongst a few fresh drops Sithelo’s Forever, 2020 is already shaping up to be the year of lush love songs.

And Mthunzi, who’s just premiered his debut album, is a refreshing addition to the landscape.

After the release of the singles ‘Vuka’ and ‘Insimbi X Sun-El Musician’ last year, which earned him a fast-growing following, the up and coming singer has debuted his first studio album.

Entitled ‘Selimathunzi, which translates to “sunset” in isiZulu, the 16 track offering finds Mthunzi lavishing mellow African and experimental sonics with tender vocals delivered in his native tongue.

Mthunzi Selimathunzi

The singer, who recently distilled his journey from KZN to Johannesburg in the quest for his musical dream on the ‘Massive Music’ TV show, says Africans must bring their authentic selves to the world stage.

“As Africans we must take pride in our heritage and we must present to the world our own style of music; singing in our own vernacular does just that,” says the new kid on the block. “I hope listeners will receive and appreciate my music without limitations.”

A blend of Maskandi, House, Afro-pop and R&B, Selimathunzi features 16 tracks, which were penned by the artist with the support of a number of featured artists: Sun-El Musician, Simmy, Ami Faku, S-Tone, Sino Msolo and Claudio X Kenza.

Nine months in the making, the young singer says the album was inspired by music from around the world.

While Mthunzi describes each song as special, the one closest to his heart is Phondo Olukhulu, a song of appreciation dedicated to the El World Music family – he signed with El World Music in 2017.

He believes, however, that Ngibambe La, which boasts an exciting experimental sound, has great potential to be a hit.

The song, which became the first single from the album, is a mix of Pop and House. The song, says Mthunzi, is an expression of love. “Ngibambe La not only expresses love, but also states publicly that my girl is taken. With its slow tempo, it is an easy-listening song with a message that is very relatable,” he explains. “I am very grateful towards the El World Music team,” says Mthunzi, “as they assisted with the song selection and were instrumental in the arrangement of the songs on the album.”

According to the young singer, his biggest challenges over the course of compiling the album were operating at a faster than usual pace, and the pressure of working among acclaimed musicians.

The rising local star, who comes from Hammarsdale, a small town in KwaZulu-Natal, believes that music is a gift given to him by God. It was his mother who first discovered his gift and who encouraged him to develop it and share it with the world. “Music is my life. I have been perfecting my musical gift from a very young age, through playing various instruments and performing in my community. It has been a rollercoaster journey with many challenges, but I have persevered,” he says.

As he earns the respect of fellow artists and audiences across the country with his unique sound, Mthunzi happily shares his greatest life lesson – cast no judgement. “I was raised by my grandparents who instilled in me the value of showing respect to all, no matter who they are.”

This, along with his innate talent and work ethic, is set to propel the rising young star forward.

5 Bangers To Peep Now – Nomcebo, Jazzidisciples & More

Fresh drops to check out this week.

There’s so much to be said about this toon. First of all, evidence that Amapiano will continue to dominate the charts and give us street essentials is all over the streams, the loud Polo driving down your block, and on Tik Tok.

While incumbents Kabza De Small, DJ Maphorisa and the Jazzidisciples have continued on their rise, new voices are bringing something fresh and exciting to the soundscape and we are happy about it.

Second point; that Soulful G is one to watch. Along with her fly look and stage presence, her vocals are really something. The collaborative collective recently unleashed a stunning live set for the song on Massive Music, and we just knew there’s a new girl in town.

What’s more, Uthando is a definite bop. The love-soaked joint serves that lavish piano mid-tempo groove that works for all the different vibes and situations that are now allowed on alert level 1 of the countrywide Lockdown.

By now, Nomcebo Zikode has proven that she has all it takes to make the whole world stand up.

Fresh from conquering charts around the world with Jerusalema, on which she laid those soul-stirring vocals that take you to church, the songbird has made a strong return with Xola Moya Wami.

She makes magic with Master KG, so it’s unsurprising the two have managed to deliver yet another massive hit for 2020. With the spiritual themes on Jerusalema, they have also managed to establish somewhat of a niche for themselves.

Xola Moya Wami takes this beautiful sound, which blends gospel influences with house music, to yet another level.

As it is, the song is a strong contender for song of the year.

Black Coffee this week marked a triumphant return to the charts with a brand new single. The South African record producer, who has managed to woo audiences all around the world, dropped Ready For You.

With Celeste’s sun-drenched vocals melting over Coffee’s relaxed and dreamy electro instrumental, the song is just the right fit for the looming summer. The Los Angeles based singer unleashes smooth echoes in her ethereal treatment of an ode to a potential lover.

The song is a beautiful nudge to Black’s strengths and past highlights, such as Drive and Your Eyes with Shekhinah. Would be a perfect soundtrack on that long summer drive to Rocking The Daisies.

Kelly Khumalo is a fighter. Despite being a constant target for rife speculation about her personal life on social media, which often comes with the odd touch of character assassination, she seems to always come back with some fresh and delightful to offer.

On Empini, she proves her timeless talent is the weapon she will keep using to pace past the slander from the detractors. After all, navigating the rough landscape of angered locals is something she’s had plenty of opportunities to finesse.

Meaning ‘At War’, Khumalo’s latest hit is an emotional chant to a lover. She’s aware that the schemes of her foes may threaten to end a good thing, but she will not have it. The song, which debuted hot on the heels of her Showmax reality show Life With Kelly Khumalo, is a defiant statement from the powerhouse singer.

Their timing is impeccable. Just in time for the summer, and as the country moves to level 1 of the Lockdown, the architects of amapiano unleash an effortless. ‘Zlele’ is already shot to the top of streaming charts all over the place, and the song is getting its rightful buzz out the scene.

On the banger, Jazzidisciples combine the popular trappings of an average piano hit with a nostalgic Kwaito flavour to give us an easy soundtrack for summer 2020. So the hook is catchy and melodic, but the instrumental snaps. The organic hi-hats and percussion are just a few ingridients that make this song what it is.

Is AKA’s Upcoming ‘Mufasa’ Song about Cassper?

Revealed tracklist sparks a frenzy.

You’d think with all the SA celebrity feuds happening, locals would have moved on from the long-standing beef between rappers AKA and Cassper. After all, the Nasty C and DJ Speedsta fallout has kept everyone busy.

But it looks like street chatter about the never-ending strife between SA Hip Hop’s biggest arch-rivals is nowhere near dying out.

Now that AKA has shared the tracklist of his forthcoming EP, fans have started wondering whether Cassper will be a subject matter on the project.

The speculation comes after one of the 13 tracks shared by AKA included a joint called ‘Mufasa’. If by any chance you aren’t aware, Mufasa is Cassper’s other stage moniker.

The name, which is a reference to the iconic lion character on The Lion King, has become so synonymous with Cassper that fans named his nicknamed his newborn son ‘Simba’.

With that in mind, there are more chances of Christmas being postponed than this being a coincidence. Is it a track about Cassper Nyovest?

Although the tracklist, which landed just days after Cassper Nyovest released his 5th studio album Any Minute Now, features some previously released tracks, the appearance of ‘Mufasa’ on the list has generated the most buzz around SupaMega’s looming project.

AKA has since shot down the speculation. The publicity, though, is sweet.

Nasty C and DJ Speedsta Can’t Stand Each Other Now

No love lost, it seems.

It’s been months since Nasty C and DJ Speedsta indulged in a nasty public exchange of words. But it appears the two have not moved from their highly publicized feud, which was splashed all over the timelines in April this year. In a new round of mudslinging, neither pulled any punches as they tossed jibes at each other on Twitter.

It started with Nasty C’s very candid conversation between Nasty C and Mag C in a new episode on his popular YouTube podcast. It’s there that the Zulu Man With Some Power rapper opened up about his ongoing beef with the DJ and Hip Hop producer.

“I think it was about more than that. It was also about some personal shit that he was going through… It stemmed from a dark place though. Jealousy, envy… all that shit’, Nasty charged. He also took the liberty to claim that Speedsta had been lying about the whole Bamm Bamm saga.

Speedsta wasn’t about to take the mudslinging laying low. In a series of tweets he has since deleted in respect of “a client”, the Mayo producer ripped into Nasty.

Nasty deployed his lyricist arsenal to shade Speedsta

We’ve got a funny feeling these two won’t be realising a collabo anytime soon…
