Up and coming artists and aspirant musicians will be getting another dope opportunity to showcase their work; AFROPUNK’s Battle Of The Bands competition returns to South Africa this November in Johannesburg!

The competition offers a platform to unsigned acts where they can showcase their musical skills for the opportunity to perform  at the main AFROPUNK Festival in December.

The competition, now in its third instalment in South Africa, has unearthed incredible musicians such as 2018 winners Red Robyn and Ikati Esengxoweni along with Automatic Live and Stiff Pap who won the competition in 2017.

Entries for local bands to enter opened on September 30th, and artists who are interested in giving this a shot can enter on the AFROPUNK website here.

This is not a drill! The Battle Of The Bands competition has launched various careers across the world, with acts using the platform as a stepping stone to realising their dreams of becoming world-class performing artists.

Here in Mzansi, AFROPUNK will award the winning band with a distribution deal with Africa’s premier artist development hub, Africori.

AFROPUNK and Africori will also host a two day seminar for the Battle of the Bands finalists prior to their shows, to help all finalists with tools they need to take their careers to the next level.

The hotly anticipated third AFROPUNK Joburg shindig will take place at Constitution Hill on 30 and 31 December, under the theme WE SEE YOU, ‘a message that brings together AFROPUNK ideology and the people who support it, under the banner of acknowledgment, and in resistance to those who strive to oppress’.

Semi Tee, Miano and Kammu Dee Explain Controversial ‘Abantwana AmaUber’ Lyrics

The House producers behind the hit ‘Abantwana AmaUber’ explain how the song does not promote drug abuse

In fresh South African Music News, Semi Tee, Miano and Kammu Dee have finally cleared the air on why their Amapiano street anthem, Ambantwana AmaUber, does not promote drug abuse.

The song, which has catapulted the collaborative formation into instant stardom thanks to its catchy beat and hook, has also raised some questions about whether or not the lyrical content encourages the use of drugs.

After all, the Abantwana AmaUber song not only brazenly features lyrics that speak about sniffing substances, but has also come to be accompanied by a popular dance routine which depicts the act.

MORE MZANSI MUSIC NEWS: 5 SOUTH AFRICAN SONGS YOU SHOULD BE LISTENING TO!

But according to the hitmakers, the widespread perception that they are promoting the use of drugs couldn’t be further from the truth.

As it turns out, the song is in fact a call to young people to be vigilant against the scourge of drugs haunting township communities.

In an interview on Massive Music, Channel O’s hit music show, the three explained that the song was created to raise awareness and condemn the use of drugs.

Thina sipromoter ukuthi abantu basuke ezintweni ezibhedayo, yang’thola?” (We want people to stay away from bad thing, you know what mean?”, they explained.

“We say no drugs”, they said. “We want the township to change.”

According to the Amapiano scorcher cookers, it’s unfortunate that many people have misinterpreted the song.

The part of the song ‘labantwana ba wrong’ (these kids are wrong) suggests their use of drugs is being condemned, rather than promoted.

Burna Boy, who is billed to perform at the Africans Unite Concert despite denouncing South Africa in September, will also perform at the highly anticipated AFROPUNK Joburg Festival this December!

While the African Giant vowed that to never set foot in South Africa during the spate of xenophobic violence in September, QuenchSA can confirm that he is still one of the headliners at this year’s festival, which will take place on December 30th  and December 31st at Constitution Hill, Johannesburg.

The music and lifestyle shindig, which is headlined by a bevy of local and international artists, including Solange, Miguel, Goldlink and Masego, will be making a triumphant return to continue from their sophomore slay in Mzansi.

Fans can also anticipate Sho Madjozi, who’s high energy performances have become part of her MO.

She’s likely to unleash her international sensation, John Cena, which saw her meet with the wrestler as a surprise during a performance on Kelly Clarkson’s talk show. There’s now talk of her making a cameo in his upcoming film, with details to follow. Our Celebrity News page will keep you posted.

There’s the talented NAO, the London based neo-soul songbird, whose beautiful discography continues to get her attention around the world.

The festival has also managed to bring together, legendary group, The Kwani Experience, after eight years apart, a treat most fans are looking forward to.

Other favourites everyone is looking to seeing include Urban Village, Busiswa and Blinky Bill. To conclude this year’s artists roster, AFROPUNK has the likes of JazziDisciples, Brazillian DJ collective Batekoo, DJ Kenzhero, and Zara Julius who will be joining Gina Jeanz, Lelowhatsgood behind the DJ booth.

A new addition to this year’s festival is “The Championship Ball”, a collaboration between Le Grand Ball and Vogue Nights Jozi. Vogue Nights Jozi and Le Grand Ball aim to redefine and reimagine the nightlife scene in Johannesburg by creating safer spaces for queer, trans and non-binary bodies through ballrooms, which push the boundaries of music, fashion and dance.

These joint movements serve as a springboard for queer excellence, performance and gives a platform for bodies that are usually side-lined in regular spaces in the city.

The Championship Ball will bring together houses from Johannesburg and all around the country to compete in a runway presentation across four categories.

Joburg based House of Diamonds and House of Rêve will be joined by a 3rd house, the winner of the upcoming Le Grand Ball. The winning house will walk away with a cash prize and crowned as the grand champion.

Priced between R600 daily or R1100 for general weekend pass, to the limited VIP R2900 tickets, tickets can be bought here.

It’s official, Toni Braxton hasn’t aged a day. And, apparently, neither has her enchanting stage presence and powerful voice, which is being lauded for melting down deliciously on live instrumentations like honey.

The powerhouse RnB icon on Saturday delighted fans when she delivered a flawless performance at her Johannesburg concert, which took place at the Dome. Following weeks of mounting anticipation for one of the world’s best selling female artists of all time, Braxton finally satiated the sold out crowd with a smooth show.

Opening with Please, she launched the crowd into a frenzy the moment she emerged from beneath the stage, popping out to kick off a night to remember.

The singer, who was also honoured with a couple of plaques to solidify the impact she’s had in South Africa, could barely keep her eyes dry after she was awarded with the plaques from Universal and Sony Music South Africa. “You guys mean everything to me! Everything!”, she said, before belting belting out her hit, You Mean The World To Me.

Toni unleashed a sickening set of timeless classics from her acclaimed discography. Fans couldn’t stop singing along to songs like He Wasn’t Man Enough, Unbreak My Heart, and You’re Making Me High (which she interspersed with the remix – Part II).

Fans couldn’t keep count of the outfit changes, each one more dazzling than before. But the Spanish Guitar kept things interesting as she switched flows in between her classic ballads and upbeat bops.
