Kanye West Opens Up About Battling Bipolar

Published

on

Kanye West is possibly one of the most polarising characters in the imagination of contemporary culture.

He became an instant pariah after the severe backlash over his infamous comments on slavery. Amongst a litany of messy screw ups he delivered in quick succession, Kanye’s affiliation with Donald Trump’s politically regressive administration did not garner him any more public favour.

And now Ye has lifted the veil to reveal glimpses of his battle with Bipolar disorder.

Kanye West

The music mogul turned fashion designer got frank with David Letterman about his “health issue”, detailing his personal experience with the manic-depressive illness.

Sitting down with Letterman in his new Netflix show, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, West recalls the moments that led to him being admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

West described the bipolar episodes in great detail.

kanye West

“When you are in a state, you’re hyper paranoid about everything”, he explained. “Everyone now is an actor. Everything is a conspiracy. You see everything. You feel the government is putting chips in your head.”

“You feel everyone is trying to kill you.”

The moments of his much publicised hospitalisation were quite ‘cruel’, revealed the father of four. “They put you (down) to handcuff you. They drug you. They put you into bed and separate you from everyone you know.”

And because it’s quite an isolating experience, “when you are in that state you have to have someone you trust. It is cruel and primitive to do that.”

“I feel a heightened connection with the universe when I’m ramping up.”

The Yeezy creative designer also tackled the social stigma attached to mental disorders, which makes it harder for those who have been diagnosed.

“It’s a health issue that has a strong stigma on it, and people are allowed to say anything about it… discriminate in any way.

(It’s) like a sprained brain, like having a sprained ankle. If someone has a sprained ankle, you’re going not to push on them more. With us, once our brains get to the point of spraining, people do everything to make it worse.”

My Next Guest Needs No Introduction is now streaming on Netflix.

Mafikizolo Returns To Form with New Single ‘Thandolwethu’

A toast for love.

Published

on

Mafikizolo

We can always count on Mafikizolo to give us a lush love song to melt away the blues. And true to form, the iconic South African Afropop duo has debuted their brand new single. The uptempo Thandolwethu is a love-soaked ode to the kind of love that can stand the test of time.

In the same spirit of their previous single, Ngeke Balunge, the new single celebrates the resilience of a romance that is able to victor against the ulterior motives and schemes of the detractors.

Because sometimes when a relationship is that beautiful, a few of the smiles around it conceal pure envy.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: MAFIKIZOLO TALKS STAYING POWER, LOVE & REINVENTION

As Mafikizolo marks a return to their roots of pure Afrosoul with a focus on themes of love, the song is a toast.

Having taken somewhat of a detour to diversify their sound and aesthetic, the duo famously successfully dabbled in afro-beats as they collaborated with a diverse bevy of producers and musicians across the continent. The list includes Uhuru, with whom they worked on their smash hit Khona, as well their collaborative synergy with Nigerian sensation Davido on Tchelete.

Thandolwethu is another successful collabo tale as it is co-written by the amazing artist and songwriter Msaki. “Working with Msaki has been such a blessing, she is a gifted artist and an exceptional writer”, said Nhlanhla. “Music is a universal language, and as a band we figured that the only way to stay on top is through collaboration”, Theo added in the press statement.

Babes Wodumo’s Comeback To Shake The Summer of 2020

A new era is loading.

Published

List of The Best Live Performers and Acts in South Africa

Babes Wodumo is exactly the girl we know she is.

Having appeared on our list of South Africa’s Best Live Performers for the past decade, the Durban native sure made one of the most impressive footprints in her debut in 2015.

While her popularity suffered a gradual decline over the years, the Gqom Queen is getting ready to own the looming summer.

A clip has leaked giving fans a glimpse into the filming of her new song. Back to the blockbuster Gqom beat and hella catchy hooks that propelled her to instant success when Wololo first landed and became a street anthem in 2015, the new song looks to be a potential comeback for Babes.

“Are we witnessing the second coming of Babes?”, one fan tweeted, asking what everyone else was thinking.

Word is the song, yet to have a title, is slated for release sometime in July 2020.

Babes Wodumo shot to fame in 2015 when her debut single, Wololo, became one of the biggest songs during that year.

A year later, she further capitalised on the buzz with the premiere of her first studio album, Gqom Queen Vol 1. The 13-track project packed back to back deliveries of uptempo Ggom bangers that helped the genre to mainstream reception.

And with her instant celebrity, interest in the intimate details of her personal life were soon splashed all over the media. To the shock of locals, allegations of domestic violence surfaced as a video of her boyfriend Mampintsha assaulting her surfaced.

Cases were opened and dropped. Performances were missed. Twitter accounts were hacked and things that further plunged her brand were posted. And over the past three years, lots more happened that quelled the blaze of her stardom.

But with the upcoming single, and the excitement around it, we could be experiencing a fresh start and a return to the throne for Babes.

Inside Sho Madjozi’s Collaboration with Tik Tok

She wants you to feel good.

Published

on

Best South African Live Performers and Live Acts

That Sho Madjozi sure has her eyes on all kinds of bags, and we can only stan. Fresh off yet another BET Awards nomination for Best African Act, the John Cena hitmaker has unveiled a hot campaign to delight fans during some of the blues.

Sho Madjozi has collaborated with Tik Tok on the recently launched #SpiritsUP campaign.

The campaign, according to the popular short video format social platform, has been designed to provide users some comfort and “encourage everyone to have a positive outlook even amidst these challenging times”, it says here.

Sho Madjozi Spirits Up Tik Tok

And true to the rapper’s colour and uptempo vibe, she had debuted a new single called Spirit Up. The gqom layered banger has come with a visual that has been created with the fun and playful vibe that has become synonymous with the platform.

Locals are encouraged to jump on to TikTok and spread the joy by creating their own dance video.

When asked about why this initiative was close to her heart, Sho Madjozi said that she too had found social distancing, and lockdown in general, to be discouraging at times, but believed that it was important to find ways to keep her spirits up and alive – this was the inspiration for her new song.

“I want to encourage people to look at the brighter side of life – to remain positive and try to have fun among all this madness. This is why I chose to partner with TikTok on this launch. While I have been at home, TikTok has been a platform for me to find joy and entertainment. Even more so, it has been a way for me to connect with my fans.”

Flowing with an upbeat and groovy Gqom sound, Sho Madjozi encourages listeners in her song to “keep our hopes alive – gotta take care so the spirit doesn’t die.”

“At TikTok, our mission is to inspire creativity and bring joy. In difficult times like these, it’s even more important to maintain an optimistic outlook and remain joyful, which is why we have launched this campaign to bring everyone together as a community that is supporting, encouraging, and even uplifting one another.

As the TikTok community continues using their creativity to motivate one another, we’re excited to see what kind of creative expressions our users will create as part of the #SpiritsUP campaign to the tune of Sho Madjozi’s latest single,” said Boniswa Sidwaba, TikTok Content Operations Manager, Africa.

Accompanying the new single is an official music video in collaboration with popular TikTok dance creators, Matthew J Power and Reece Clewis. Locals are encouraged to get in on the action and spread those positive vibes. All you need to do is hop onto TikTok, create your video using Sho Madjozi’s new song, caption it with #SpiritsUP and post!

Madjozi will be performing the song live for the first time on Tik Tok on her page at 19:00 on July 3rd.
