Inside The Heritage Through Fashion Show
Published
1 year agoon

David Tlale made a shimmery return from his New York Fashion Week outing with Bonang Matheba and Anatii on time to showcase his latest collection at the Mall of Africa on Saturday, September 15th.
The Edgar’s fashion range is now available at selected Edgar’s stores countrywide.
As part of the South African’s Heritage Month celebrations, the Heritage through Fashion show was seen by hundreds of Saturday shoppers at the Mall of Africa, as well as by selected, invited guests and featured models who strutted their stuff wearing outfits not only from David Tlale, but from Jet, Edgars, Edcon’s Design Innovation Challenge students and the NM100 merchandise range which pays homage to Madiba’s centenary year.
“Edcon has taken the amount of locally designed and manufactured clothing, footwear and accessories in its stores from under 20% to almost 55% in recent years, and this alone is cause for celebration for the Buy Local movement,” said Eustace Mashimbye, CEO of Proudly South African.
“These local ranges are an important step in the direction of providing consumers with more local choices in our shops, and conscientising them about the impact that buying anything local has on job creation and the economy.”
Elelwane Pahlana, Divisional Executive Group Transformation & Government Relations at Edcon said, “We are definitely proud of both the work we have done to increase localisation in stores, as well as our association with Proudly South African, and this second collaboration with them on a Heritage Month Fashion Show is part of showcasing that partnership. This year, we are including the consumer in a public event to raise awareness and encourage consumers to support the “Buy local” movement.”
Put together by Edcon, the Heritage Fashion Show took place in the Mall of Africa’s Food Hall and featured collections from various designers including Sonwabile Ndamase and young designers in the Edcon Design Innovation Challenge Programme whose collections are available in selected Edgars stores.

It appears the festive spirit of giving is upon us, and South African fashion designer David Tlale is looking to make one lucky bride’s dreams come true.
The acclaimed fashion dab hands is joining forces with Tastic Rice to give away an awe inspiring traditional wedding dress, which was showcased as part of his SS20 Collection at AFI Fashion Week in Johannesburg.

The announcement and showcase for the magical dress was attended by a bevy of notable guests, who were clad in their vibrant heritage themed garb. Spotted were Mthoko ‘Swenka’, Tracy Hlophe, Dj Sithelo who got the party going after the formal proceedings were over
The dress was worn by Zama Gcaba, who is also known as ‘Black Barbie’. The menu for this auspicious day was curated by Chef Lenstwe who ensured the guests had a proper feast.
The print from which the dress is made is inspired by a uniquely South African story of heritage and a celebration of our various cultures. “I created the dress with the bride that would win it in mind. I wanted to capture the essence of the meeting of two families and the merging of their heritage, and the spirit of celebration that surrounds the wedding day” said David Tlale.
Adding, “Every bride deserves a couture moment and I’m excited to make one special bride’s dreams come to life,” Tlale continues.
The dress was showcased as part of a collection that pays homage to David’s recently deceased mother, and fuses elements of the rice brand’s Heritage campaign that rolled out during the month of September.
The competition will be run across national and regional radio as well as social media from October, and the winner will be announced in December 2019.

The only thing better than securing a clean pair of brand new kicks is getting a dope set that is authentically South African.
Being clad in local innovation isn’t just cool as a political statement; but also because our designers are kicking ass. One such brand is Bathu, who are looking into disrupting and elevating the current local landscape this summer.
The South African sneaker brand is scaling their business to avail their sneakers nationally, and it’s a first.

Conceptualised and established in the streets of Alexandra, Johannesburg, in 2015, Bathu has experienced exponential commercial growth and cultural value. From moving their drops in the streets to the successful launch of four major retail stores throughout the country.
The #YamaSupa is a first from Bathu and draws inspiration from a multitude of South African cultures. With the creative mojo ‘Abafana be style, abo sisi bama weave, wonke ama kasi alles, this is for you.’
The Bathu architects are elated about this next move.

Adding, “We are extremely excited to be bringing something that we hope will be an advocate for change in the current worldview of locally produced brands, also allowing for the nation a glimpse into our daily lives. People should be on the lookout for us and what we have in store this season”
