Real Housewives of Johannesburg Are Everything! Why We Are Obsessed
Friday night saw the season one premiere of the Real Housewives of Johannesburg! Here’s what we thought about the Jozi version of the popular franchise
Speculation of a possible South African interpretation of the popular Real Housewives franchise has been doing the rounds for over 5 years, with rumours of ongoing production being belied by a no-show of the highly anticipated reality show.
Instead, fans were treated to infamous alternatives, most which deserved no sequels. We won’t mention names.
On Friday night, 1Magic premiered the Real Housewives of Johannesburg, a one-hour reality show offering a glimpse inside the lives of some the city’s most monied, fierce, and catty women!
The season one premiere comes months after a busy marketing campaign to promote the show’s awareness, which was obviously met with scepticism from many cynical fans who’ve seen many local adaptations of international formats been tortured with ashy standards.
Yet Friday night came with a pleasant surprise from the show, secured and produced by Sonia Mbele’s company, RHOSA.
Fans were delighted by the sheer opulence displayed on the show, with most of the housewives unafraid to exhibit their lavish lifestyles!
Five minutes in; Brinnette, Christall, Evodia and Lendy each showed us their massive mansions, fleet of luxury cars and enviable closets amongst many other aspirational sparkles! Naledi and Mercy are such hotties; and they showed us we aren’t exactly in the same tax bracket (thanks for the phrase Nomzamo Mbatha!).
The ladies appeared to be quite relaxed about flaunting their enviable lifestyles, and that’s something that continues being rare in this part of the world.
But that’s not all, the quality of the show’s production matches and rivals and matches those of US franchises! When one viewer remarked “Which part of Johannesburg is this?” on Twitter, we knew the show had already achieved most of what it intends to. You may know the dusty parts of Joburg; but that’s on you. It’s on us, guys, some people are living and we are accompanying them!
After watching the women’s glitzy lives for a few minutes, I started wondering if this was about to be another a middle-aged version of Rich Kids.
Fortunately, the girls are far too shady for any of that! The diamonds are clean but there’s plenty of shade to dim a few sparkles here and there. We already know that Evodia and Lendy didn’t get off to a good start because Lendy got a bit too excited after a few glasses of champagne and kept “touching”, which pissed off Evodia, a.k.a, Madamme, profusely.
We now also know that Naledi, whom we’ve thus far known as Dj Naked’s second wife and Minnie Dlamini’s friend and bridesmaid on her wedding reality show, is fine as fuck. Though, she’s rubbed Mercy the wrong way (for hugging her in a dismissive manner), and Brinnette, who says you are either “in or out” with her.
Christall, who seems to have a foot in her mouth situation going on, is likely to become the season’s villain! During all the interactions (mostly with Lendy, who she read to filth), she pulled no punches when it came to sharing her controversial mind. And her shady diaries? Bring her on!

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are in for a treat. Disney+ has announced that 1 February marks the arrival of Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” The blockbuster will be joining 16 other on the streaming platform.
ABOUT THE MOVIE
Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba) fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death.
As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda. Introducing Tenoch Huerta Mejía as Namor, ruler of a hidden undersea nation, the film also stars Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Mabel Cadena and Alex Livinalli.
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” directed by Ryan Coogler and produced by Kevin Feige and Nate Moore, is now playing in theaters.

They are one of South Africa’s most revered music duos.
Their discography packs both blockbuster club bangers and lush delights for lovers of House with a transcendental African sonic flair. And the explosive fallout of Black Motion, which has been splashed across the internet long before reaching the courts, has shocked many.
Loved for their electrifying live performances and awe-inspiring chemistry, Mörda and Smol have always seemed like musical soulmates. But that relationship seems to have reached a bitter end.
In 2022, rumours of their reported split triggered a frenzy on the internet. Following the uproar, the group’s members Bongani Mohosana, who now goes as Mörda, and Smol (real name Roy Thabo Mabogwane), jointly calmed fears that they had fallen out.
It had been said the break would be temporary, as Mörda moved to focus on the release of his solo studio album.
Far from it, it now seems. The parties have escalated things to court.
According to reports, Black Motions have confirmed that they had pressed charges against Mörda for alleged housebreaking and theft.
A court order by the High Court in Gauteng posted on social media has ordered Morda to “restore possession of a recording studio apparatus” to the group by 13 January, at 5pm.
Black Motion shared snaps of the alleged damage caused by Morda – a broken door and stolen equipment.

It looks like we won’t be getting a new Black Motion album with Mörda anytime soon.
