Hugh Masekela Dies At Age Of 78

Legendary South African Jazz composer, trumpeter and musician, Hugh Masekela, has died.



South Africa is mourning the death of legendary jazz musician Hugh Masekela, whose death was announced in a statement issued by his family on Tuesday morning.

Masekela succumbed to his battle with cancer, which he had been battling since 2008, eNCA has reported.

“Our hearts beat with profound loss”, the family penned in the statement.

Hugh’s global and activist contribution to and participation in the areas of music, theatre and the arts in general is contained in the minds and memories of many across 6 continents and we are blessed and grateful to be part of a life and ever-expanding legacy of love, sharing and vanguard creativity that spans the time and space of 6 decades.”

Known affectionately to his fans as ‘Bra Hugh’, the Grammy-nominated South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, composer, and singer was born on April 4th in 1939 in Witbank.

Dubbed the ‘Father of South African Jazz’ for his pioneering contributions that have left an indelible mark in the music industry, Hugh Masekela gained prominence while composing and penning popular songs with anti-apartheid themes.
