SAMA22 Red Carpet Watch: Everything Your Faves Wore & Didn’t!

Stars came out to play on the 2016 SAMA22 red carpet, and showcased their best garments. Let’s see who took their style a step further, and whose misteps have been charged.

Stars came out to play at the 22nd Annual South African Music Awards in Durbs this past weekend.

READ: 12 LOOKS THAT WILL RULE THE SAMA 2016 RED CARPET (WE WERE SPOT ON!)

And while chunks of the local music biz’s biggest event left much to be desired, celebs aimed for their rightful ‘Ooh’s and ‘Aah’s on the red carpet. But as every red carpet would constantly prove, some end up with their well earned ‘Eew’s. Here’s a look at some memorable looks from the night.

LOOTLOVE

SAMA red Carpet 2016 Loot love

Lootlove resisted all expectations when she stepped out in this beautiful pink gown. It accentuates her most beautiful features, showcases her long legs and steals the thunder with the bright splash. The train adds the right dose of drama without taking away from the show stopping piece. Easily the night’s winner!

BOITY IN THAT DRESS!

SAMA 2016 Red Carpet Boity

This was certainly the most talked about dress for the evening, but only because someone thought they had spotted Boity’s private parts through the blue sheer lace. Turned out it was just a shadow resulting from those crafty blue things torturing the dress. So that was cleared. We love this girl sooo much, but this dress is truly unfortunate. It divides her body into several chapters. But the story has a bad ending.

LERATO KYANYAGO

SAMA 2016 red carpet

Don’t Photoshop it: We told you in our SAMA 2016 Red Carpet Fashion Prediction that sheer gowns will still be a thing this year. Lerato Kganyago served an ample busty display in this stunning black sheer black and gold Quiteria dress. Not the most original dress in recent memory, but it’s gorgeous nonetheless.

BONANG MATHEBA

SAMA 2016 red carpet Bonang Matheba

She’s one of the most stylish women in South Africa, so Bonang’s beautiful beige shimmery dress with subtle metallic details was a rightful hit for the night. Those apt shoulder pads add an element of drama to this otherwise demure and glamorous number. She paired it with a matching purse. A sight to behold!

RIKY RICK

SAMA 2016 red carpet Riky RickAdmittedly, rappers aren’t typically the first to pop up in the mind when talking high fashion. But the scantily clad Riky Rick proved us wrong when he emerged in this bedazzled get up from Gucci. It’s swag with an avant garde twist, a risk we’re glad he took. Someone needed to do something daring out there. Those shoes aren’t for the fait hearted, though.

NOMZAMO MBATHA

Nomzamo Mbatha SAMA 2016 red carpet

We had such high hopes for the Isibaya actress, who has been hitting all the right fashion spots lately. And yet this pretty dress forced her blend into the background, where she doesn’t belong. While the dress is pretty and compliments her banging bod, for the SAMAs, it nearly went under. We won’t get started with the wig, seeing we’ve a super soft spot for Mbatha.

KATLEGO MABOE

Katlego MaboeKatlego kept it debonair, clean, sleek and hot AF. Now that’s how you wear a suit. Expensive looking with futuristic undertones against a throwback feel. This suit is so flattering on his body, showing off his refined physique. Yes. Yes. Yes!

Nomuzi Mabena SAMA 2016 Red carpet

We expected nothing less from our former QuenchSA Style Crush! This turquoise shimmery gown with green embellishments and a sparkling brown skirt proves why Gert Johan Coetzee is one of the country’s go to designers for events of this calibre.

NANDI MNGOMA

Nandi Mngoma SAMA 2016 red carpet

If you’re gonna go sheer (almost everyone went there), that’s how you do it! Everything about Nandi Mngoma’s black and silver dress is simply breathtaking. Less is more with the African accessories, the beautiful short natural hair and the make up. On point.

PEARL MODIADIE

SAMA 2016 red carpet

This breathtaking red dress transformed Pearl. Synchronised perfectly with that edgy make up and her killer bob, man!

All of the Winners at The Royalty Soapie Awards 2020

Full list of all the winners.

Published

Teddy Best Newcomer

On Saturday evening, a constellation of stars and supporting cast were honoured for their outstanding work. The 4th Royalty Soapie Awards celebrated the South African soapie industry in style with comedian Mpho Popps and deejay Lerato LKG Kganyago performing hosting duties.

All of your favourite soapie stars were dressed to the nines, as they gathered to celebrate fellow thespians who were recognised for their commitment to their craft and playing a vital role in the performing arts.

The show kicked things off with the announcement of the winners in the technical categories honouring outstanding editing, lighting, art direction and directing teams in a soapie. Ushered by the sound of award-winning songstress, Shekinah with her track ‘What a Love’.

Mpho Popps & Lerato Kganyago

The creative categories followed paying homage to the writing teams that pens imagination to tell stories loved by viewers alongside the beauty gurus (Make-up & Hair) and fashionistas (Wardrobe) that sets the trends in the make-believe world of soapies.

One of the highlights of this year’s awards show was a special moment with the public vote winner and superfan, Frans Mohale who co-presented the public vote category the Most Popular Soapie of the Year alongside Lootlove.

Another first for The Royalty Soapie Awards was a beautiful ‘In Memoriam’ tribute to all the entertainment artists, pioneers and legends who have left a legacy in the industry remembered through a touching tune from Toya Delazy accompanied by a dance duo’s performance, Thabiso Lekuba and Tholakele Nkala.

Leading the way with a song of hope titled ‘Pieces’ by actresses Siyasanga Papu and Sihle Ndaba who showcased their singing talents and handed the baton to guest presenters, actress Deirdre Wolhuter and diversity advocate, Thando Hopa who had the task of announcing Getroud met Rugby as the winners of the new recognition award, Social Cohesion.

The Background Actor Recognition Award went to Sphiwe Msebe from Isidingo, who was essential in creating the tone, mood and atmosphere of the soapie. Sphiwe always dreamt to be an actor but did not have formal opportunities to make his dream a reality until he became a background actor on Isidingo.

The prestigious category of the evening, the Outstanding Soapie Award closed the chapter of the awards show as Binnelanders bagged the title for 2020 Royalty Soapie Awards.

SAMA26 Lifetime Achievement & International Achievement Award Announced

SA Legends get their flowers!

Published

on

bishop Benjamin Dube

The build-up to the SAMA26 is underway and the most recent update released was the announcement of the Lifetime Achievement Awards and the International Achievement Award recipients. Bishop Benjamin Dube will be honoured for his spiritual stewardship in the gospel industry and the late Dan Tshanda will be honoured posthumously for his great run in the 1980s.

Bishop Benjamin Dube’s numbers are bar none. With hits such as Holy Spirit selling over 25 000 units and his live album I Feel Like Going On that went platinum, his legend is unquestionable. Having won the SAMA award before, it is fitting to bestow the award to the gospel artist.

RELATED: LIST OF ALL THE SAMA26 NOMINEES FOR ROTY & MVOTY

Another recipient that made his mark in the South African music industry was the Soweto-born producer Dan Tshanda. Dan dominated the 1980s bubblegum pop scene with his production prowess. He rose to national stardom with his group Splash following the release of their 1986 classic album Peacock.

Ndlovu Youth Choir

This year’s International Achiever Award recipient is Ndlovu Youth Choir from Limpopo. Their performances on the reality talent search show America’s Got Talent took them to the final round and captured the hearts and minds of viewers around the world. They have since been signed by Sony Music in partnership with Syco Entertainment, headed by British entertainment mogul Simon Cowell.

The choir’s debut album was released in November 2019 and delivers their signature songs that took the choir from the village of Moutse to the heights and hearts of American showbiz. The voices of Ndlovu Youth Choir have emerged as proud ambassadors for a united South Africa.

Don’t miss the five day SAMA26 spectacular streamed live on the My Muze by Vodacom platform and broadcast on Mzansi Magic, DStv channel 161 from the 3-7 August at 21:30.
