South Africa’s very first black SA Idols winner (believe it or not) may been boasting a successful music career as a recording artist, but Daily Sun is reporting that Khaya Mthethwa has been ordained as a pastor at the Oasis Church in Umlazi, Durban. With this addition to his CV, the star joins a growing list of local celebrities who have dabbled into the spiritual world as pastors and sangomas. Here are other celebrities who have heeded to the calling:

Kabelo Mabalane

What comes after a successful career as one third of the highest selling Kwaito group of all time, followed by an equally successful mult-platinum selling solo career? For former TKZee member Kabelo, God was the next step. Although he refuses to call himself a pastor because “that’s a calling”, he graduated with a Diploma at Bible School and is now better known as Reverend Mabalane in certain circles.

Baby Cele

Actress Baby Cele was initiated as a sangoma a few years ago. Later, she revealed that the calling was in fact meant for her mother but due to old age, she could not become a sangoma.

Layota Makhene

Latoya left it all behind to pursue her spiritual gift in KwaThema Springs. There, she stayed for 3 months, ran away when the initiation took its toll, and then returned again months later to complete the process. She now juggles her acting schedule with a small consulting business where she heals.

Bongani Masondo

Actor Bongani Masondo keeps close contacts with the ancestral spirits. Unfortunately, he was once booted out of Kabelo’s Boot Camp because contestants there complained of his late night rituals as part of his communication with the elders.

Other celebrities who have been open about their calling

Camagwini

Ken Nkwashu

DJ Treasure

Ntokozo Masinga

Busi Zokufa

and Nozinzi Williams
