Nomzamo Mbatha and Maps Maponyane showcase their skills as they claim the lead on Akin Omotoso’s upcoming romantic comedy, Tell Me Sweet Something. Set to hit the theatres on September 4th, the film centres around Moratiwa (Mbatha), an aspirant writer who is having difficulty generating new ideas. After recovering from her previous situationship which ended with the ex never returning from a trip to ‘buy milk’ – (not even a Whatsapp message guy?), her bestie – Tashaka (Ziqubu) encourages her to pursue dating. That’s when she meets SA’s top celebrity model, Nat Masilo (Maponyane).

Here is why you can’t miss this movie for anything:

It’s an authentic South African love story

Chick flicks are great, but the narrative on black relationships seldom explores the unique dynamics that render our romantic bonds different, fascinating and exciting. With our traditional frameworks and cultural landscape, romance in Africa can be quite different from those depicted in western settings. What sets our love stories apart is the lobola, the taxi rank, the whistles and all of it. And we are hoping Tell Me Sweet Something will showcase this without holding back.

Eye candy

Much dust has been paid to the adage, ‘Don’t rely on that body!’ by Maps Maponyane and we are signing no petition to stop the whips. And appropriately, he charges for it. Playing celebrity model Nat Masilo (Can someone please start a coffee shop with that name?), the 25 year old drops fabric to flaunt his refined phyique during some shoot. Mbatha’s dimples steal almost every scene she appears in on the trailer, of course. Yes, the casting call probably called for ‘a super hot couple’. Looks like they found it.

Your faves are on it

Objectification aside, the movie deploys the talents of an all star cast that includes the gorgeous Nomzamo Mbatha, Maps Maponyane, Kagiso Lediga, Thomas Gumede, Thembi Seete, Thishiwe Ziqubu and Mandisa Bardill. Besides, you haven’t seen Thembi Seete in a pink wig since Boom Shaka days. We don’t quite remember if any of their wigs were actually pink, but hey…

Turns out Johannesburg has love!

Who would have thought local writers would even consider the possibility of shunning the typical depiction of the city as a fast paced crime ridden jungle where an innocent girl from a village comes in search for a better life only to end up as a prostitute who gets killed? This film gives us the rare opportunity to re-imagine Johannesburg as a place with a decent, warm, beautiful and soft side. A place conducive for triumphant romance. The charm and sweet nostalgia is refreshing to say the least.

The Shocking Fallout of Black Motion

Tensions have reportedly escalated.

They are one of South Africa’s most revered music duos.

Their discography packs both blockbuster club bangers and lush delights for lovers of House with a transcendental African sonic flair. And the explosive fallout of Black Motion, which has been splashed across the internet long before reaching the courts, has shocked many.

Loved for their electrifying live performances and awe-inspiring chemistry, Mörda and Smol have always seemed like musical soulmates. But that relationship seems to have reached a bitter end.

In 2022, rumours of their reported split triggered a frenzy on the internet. Following the uproar, the group’s members Bongani Mohosana, who now goes as Mörda, and Smol (real name Roy Thabo Mabogwane), jointly calmed fears that they had fallen out.

It had been said the break would be temporary, as Mörda moved to focus on the release of his solo studio album.

Far from it, it now seems. The parties have escalated things to court.

According to reports, Black Motions have confirmed that they had pressed charges against Mörda for alleged housebreaking and theft.

A court order by the High Court in Gauteng posted on social media has ordered Morda to “restore possession of a recording studio apparatus” to the group by 13 January, at 5pm.

Black Motion shared snaps of the alleged damage caused by Morda – a broken door and stolen equipment.

It looks like we won’t be getting a new Black Motion album with Mörda anytime soon.
