Apple Music To Celebrate African Legends on Africa Day

Published

on

In celebration of Africa Day on the 25th of May Apple Music has launched African Legends, a hub which offers a rich collection of music from across the continent, featuring many much loved African artists.

Africa is home to a colourful tapestry of musical styles, from the soulful sounds of folk musician Vusi Mahlasela and the funk-Afrobeat of Nigerian William Onyeabor to Algerian singer Khaled with his pop and “Rai” style of music.

To honour this legacy of rhythms on Africa Day, Apple Music have hand-picked a broad range of artists, including the likes of Cesaria Evora (Cape Verde), Lucky Dube (South Africa), Fela Kuti (Nigeria) and many others from all corners of Africa.

The African Legends hub consists of Essentials Playlists, Essentials Albums, Classic Singles, A Spotlight On and a dedicated Playlist with 50 of the top African songs of all time.

The Essentials Playlists feature the soothing melodies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo (South Africa), Mali’s Amadou and Mariam, the rich voice of Angélique Kidjo (Benin) and South Africa’s own “Mama Africa”, Miriam Makeba and her township-inspired Afrojazz. There is music from more than twenty other epic African artists including King Sunny Ade (Nigeria – African pop and Jùjù) and internationally renowned Johnny Clegg with his Afropop and Mbaqanga rhythms.

Rediscover the roots of African music in Essentials Albums with Abdullah Ibrahim and Congolese Papa Wemba’s rumba and Soukous styled album.

The “Spotlight On” contains a quintessential selection of albums by a specific musician, currently showcasing the timeless work of world-famous Youssou N’Dour.

The Classic Singles offers hits such as Brenda Fassie’s ‘Vulindela’, Mory Kante’s ‘Yeke Yeke’, Miriam Makeba’s ‘Pata Pata’ and a whole lot more.

There’s no lack of evidence that amapiano disrupted and shifted the South African music landscape in 2019!

And if Spotify’s list of the year’s most streamed songs, albums and artists from this year is anything to go by, DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small are at the crest of that wave!

Spotify has officially unveiled ‘Wrapped 2019’, an annual end of year summary that reveals the top artists, albums, songs, playlists and podcasts streamed on the platform. “Wrapped” sums up the tastes of more than 248 million people around the world, and what music and podcasts they streamed the most in the year.

QuenchSA can now reveal that breakout star Kabza De Small, who some fans feared might be suffering from fatigue from his hectic festive season touring, is the most streamed local artist this year.

He is followed closely by DJ Maphorisa, who transitioned seamlessly from Gqom to become one of the most sought after amapiano producers. Nasty C came in and took the third spot.

NEW MUSIC NEWS: THIS IS WHY FANS THINK KABZA DE SMALL NEEDS SLEEP

Spotify has officially unveiled ‘Wrapped 2019’, an annual end of year summary that reveals the top artists, albums, songs, playlists and podcasts streamed on the platform. “Wrapped” sums up the tastes of more than 248 million people around the world, and what music and podcasts they streamed the most in the year.

The streaming platform also revealed that Post Malone is 2019’s most streamed artist globally. Although the rapper has sustained considerable popularity over the last few years, this would be the first time he topped the list. His album Holly’s Bleeing is also the most streamed album in South Africa.

ALBUM REVIEW: LADY ZAMAR’S ‘MONARCH’ FINALLY ARRIVES

Khalid came in at the top spot for the most streamed artist in South Africa followed by Post Malone and Drake respectively.

The girls did big things in 2019.

Shekhinah, who recently opened for Toni Braxton when she toured South Africa this past October, has remained the most streamed local female artist on the platform. She’s followed by Lady Zamar, whose second album Monarch debuted raving album reviews. Afrikaans rock artist Karen Zoid took the third place.

MUSIC INTERVIEW: PRINCE KAYBEE ON RETIRING IN FLIP FLOPS

Newcomer and Grammy award nominated Billie Eilish’s meteoric rise to fame marked a huge footprint in South Africa as she’s the most streamed global female artist. She comes ahead of Ariana Grande.

The year’s most streamed song globally is “Señorita” by Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello with more than 1 billion streams, followed closely by Billie Eilish’s hit track “bad guy” with more than 990 million streams.

While Post Malone and Billie Eilish dominated global streaming lists, they also featured prominently in South Africa’s most streamed songs for 2019. Post Malone claimed the first and fifth spots, with “Sunflower” featuring Swae Lee as the most streamed song and “wow” in fifth position and Billie Eilish’s “bad guy” taking the fourth spot.

Closer to home, South Africans showed their support for local artists with “Drive” by Black Coffee and David Guetta (featuring Delilah Montagu) maintaining its position as the most streamed song, spearheaded by a local artist. ‘’Fetch Your Life’’ by Prince Kaybee and Msaki is the second most streamed song in South Africa, with “Dames” by Biggy, the song that became a viral sensation locally,  in at number three.

Prince Kaybee and Kabza Da Small also feature on the list of most streamed South African albums in South Africa. Prince Kaybee’s “Re Mmino” topped the list with Kabza Da Small and DJ Maphorisa’s “Scorpion Kings” in the second most streamed album slot.

AFROPUNK ‘Battle Of The Bands’ Winners Announced!

Between lavish afrosoul sounds and edgy black rock angst, two up and coming acts enter new levels.

MuNeyi’s sun soaked voice hovers beautifully over the lush, AfroSoulful devices that define his timeless sound, while the Shameless band’s raspy metallic rock delivery disrupts the soundscape by bringing blackness into the genre.

And the two South African music acts were announced as winners at the AFROPUNK Battle of the Bands competition!

This would be the first time two acts won the sought after title since the competition debuted three years ago.

Held in Braamfontein, Johannesburg on Saturday, November 30th, the 3rd edition of the competition saw Raspey, MuNeyi, Shameless and Yanga Yaya battle it out.

The finalists were selected through a public voting system hosted on AFROPUNK.com where fans got to vote for their favourite band, tossing in the as front runners in the final.

The up and coming bands will be getting a head start in the music industry with a distribution deal from Africa’s leading artist development hub, AFRICORI.

Previous winners include the likes of Red Robyn, Ikati Esengxoweni and Stiff Pap, whose career have since soared.

A bit about this year’s winners:

MUNEYI

Hailing from the green, rural Venda, Muneyi is a 23 year old Tshivenda Indie – Folk singer songwriter.

His sounds are inspired by the world around him, human behaviour, love, and his upbringing. Many have described his music as a healing experience and some, as a meeting with the gods.

Inspired by some of Africa’s greatest, Muneyi hopes to connect, heal and inspire with this sound that is deeply rooted in old Tshivenda folktales and modern sounds. His debut single, ‘Lufuno’ is available on all streaming and downloading platforms.

SHAMELESS SA

Shameless SA was founded in January 2018 by Musa Zwane, Thabang Marant and Thabo Masina. Since then the band has found great success in the music industry by performing in various venues in Gauteng.

The band is formed by three talented musicians that are passionate about creating songs that identify with their audience.

The band play a form of Tribal / Rock music that they coined as “iRock Yezi Nkabi” which means in Zulu – Zulu Assassins. The sound has been compared to heavy, aggressive and direct communication. Their music contains lyrics that relate to issues facing the youth.

The competition kicks off one of South Africa’s most musical festive seasons, what with the explosion of new genres and new acts this year. The shindig is also a lead up the third AFROPUNK Joburg festival at the Constitution Hill on December 30th and 31st.

The star studded event will feature the likes of Solange, Burna Boy, Goldlink, Masego, Sho Madjozi and amongst others Nao.
