Nomuzi Mabena found herself enduring throes of backlash on Friday.

The public counterblast followed a shocking publicity stunt staged by the V-Entertainment TV presenter and rapper, who on Thursday left fans chilled when her Instagram live stream appeared to end in a car crash.

The live stream features a decidedly inebriated Nomuzi interacting live with her followers as she announced that she would be soon accepting aspirant artists on her record label. The clip was taken in Nomuzi’s car after a date night with her boyfriend Sbu, who also happens to be her manager. The end of the ‘stream’ is a disturbing crash that left the country sending out prayers throughout the night and in the early hours on Friday.

While other fans reported having cross-nighted due to anxiety and fear for her life, Moozlie’s team kept mum for the better part of Friday. We now know that the silence was part of a carefully orchestrated campaign to shock fans and “spark a dialogue” about drinking and driving.

In what we now also know to be backpaddling from what was meant to be a full 48 hours of ghosting the nation, Mabena dished out an explanation of how the whole thing was a brand publicity move aimed at raising awareness against drinking and driving. Turns out the fake crash was a conceptual partnership between the rapper, Volkswagen and their Drive Dry campaign.

“We don’t want to see another year where thousands 0f lives are lost on our roads because of drinking and driving”, she wrote in a statement published on her social platforms.

But while the Vatel hitmaker explained that the intention of the traumatic clip was “never to distress any fans, friends or family”, the stunt was harshly criticised for being insensitive and potentially triggering for those who’ve had to recover from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that resulted from car accidents, those who’ve lost loved ones in tragic accidents under similar circumstances, and countless other instances where the advert could have opened have caused serious psychological harm.

The other side of the raging debate has focused on how the campaign has really championed a discussion about driving under the influence.

Your thoughts on the campaign?

Did they take it too far or was it a good initiative to talk about the very real, and very serious incidents of driving under the influence and allowing ourselves to be distracted by social media, thereby putting not only ourselves but other drivers in danger? South African TV audiences first encountered her through the telly when she first appeared on Generations; The Legacy in the not-so-distant past. Four years later, Thuso Mbedu has paced through hoops to become the first South African actress to score a leading role in an American series!

Mbedu has been picked to star as the lead character on Barry Jenkins’ adaptation of The Underground Railroad. The actress will be taking on the role of Cora – the main character in the critically lauded novel.

The 27 year old’s history of flirtations with Hollywood dates back to 2018 and 2019, when she received International Emmy Award nominations for her stellar portrayal of Winnie on Mzansi Magic drama series – Is’thunzi. Although she didn’t bring any of the prestigious gongs home, there’s no lack of evidence that her star has now sky rocketed to global horizons.

The Underground Railroad tells the story of a young Cora’s journey as she negotiates her way in the pre-war South, according to Variety. Following her escape from a Georgia plantation, she discovers the existence of a railroad with a secret network of tracks and tunnels.

“My thumb and neurons are failing me right”, jotted the actress on her Instagram. “So I’ll just do as most South Africans do when this happens: I GOT THE JOB!!!”

DJ Sbu at Nipsey Hussle's memorial

He’s definitely never been afraid to step outside of the convention to make a splashy point.

From plugging his energy drink onstage at the 2015 Metro FM Music awards (and being suspended shortly after), to faking a Forbes Africa cover (which reportedly resulted in legal action), it’s quite obvious that DJ Sbu has mastered the art of shocking. Unprovoked.

The multi hyphenate media personality and entrepreneur grabbed more headlines when on Tuesday, he shared a clip in which he addresses the crowd at Nipsey Hussle’s memorial gathering in Los Angeles, California.

In it, Sbu introduces himself as the ‘ambassador for Hip Hop music’. And more… so much more.

“My name is DJ Sbu. I come all the way from Johannesburg in South Africa. I’m here as an ambassador for Hip Hop music and the culture in the entire African continent. I represent musicians from the whole continent”, says the Sbu in the clip, which does not feature the rest of the speech.

While some have made fun of the questionable claims in the speech, some have commanded the successful entrepreneur’s guts.
