Summary:

Moozlie unleashes a refreshingly fierce side in this 14 track project.

Moozlie on Friday unleashed her long-awaited debut album. The 14 track project comes a year after the rapper’s first body of work – Recipe, was availed as an EP. Entitled Victory, the album boasts a slew of high profile collaborations, including amongst others AKA, Da LES, Rouge, Thabsie, Gemini Major and Youngsta CPT.

Moozlie Victory Album Review

Released independently under her label, Mabena Music, the album finds Moozlie fully embracing a refreshingly fierce side to her, which has remained watered down in her career as a television presenter.

Functioning almost as somewhat of an alter ego, which she now calls “Blanco”, the media personality often gives us glimpses into this raw and unfettered side to her, which she often brings out on stage and in her raps.

She marks her own territory as the ‘first lady’ of the Skhanda sound, which she began playing around with during her days with Cashtime. The sound itself is a blend of nostalgic Kwaito and Hip Hop, a genre offshoot which was almost entirely championed by the now dissolved music fraternity.

Aptly entitled Victory, the album distills the highs and lows of Moozlie’s artistic journey, and marks the arrival of the record as a triumphant moment in her life.

The rapper’s departure from Cashtime in 2016 marked a significant shift in her creative direction. She started wearing the ‘Skhanda Queen’ crown less frequently as she ditched her trademark bald head. Along with that came the switch from MTV to VUZU, which happened as she established her own label with new management and, to a degree, her personal style.

“Young MaBrr”, as she sometimes references herself, as an homage to the late icon and as a means to draw attention to the care free spirit, has blended different sounds in the album. There’s the loose tropical pulse apparent on such songs as Be Somebody, which weaves it seamlessly with Ride Or Die, a single from Recipe. Rap Therapy and Never Run are rawer Hip Hop tracks whose aim is to showcase her skill as a rapper.

The instrumentals focus blasting kicks and percussion as Moozlie spits aggressively.

Though, she’s at her best when she embraces her Skhanda/kwaito side, which she does on Vatel, the album’s lead single. She lays down some synthesized vocals and raps in vernacular. The song sees her reunite with Kid X, with whom she had been a co-star with at Cashtime. You will be treated to the same vibe on Sfunukwazi.

AKA’s Fela In Versace music video was met with mixed reactions from fans when it premiered on Wednesday.

While die-hard fans are thrilled by the first motion picture from the Touch My Blood album, others are let down by the visual’s aesthetic, creative direction and technical quality.

The video arrived on Wednesday following a promotional drive that began last month, when the rapper first teased fans with lush looking behind the scene photos.

Delighting his social media followers with glimpses of the video, AKA debuted his gold box fade as he showcased his outfit, which included a R25 000 Cornici Balletto print shirt.

Shot in Joburg. the music video centers on showcasing the skhothane subculture, which is defined by, amongst other things, the setting of expensive brands on fire. That happens here in between freeze frame edits that produce these cool body doubles of AKA.

Some fans have slammed the video – likening its “disappointing” quality to that of an amateur Powerpoint presentation, while some have drawn comparisons to rival, Cassper Nyovest’s Tito Mboweni video.

Others are vibing with AKA’s latest music video, complimenting SUPAMEGA for continuing his winning streak
