Idols SA Top 16: The Girls Snatched With Some Powerhouse Vocals

Idols SA Season 14 Top 16

Women’s Month may have ended but the celebration of the greatness that is women continues. On Sunday night’s episode of Idols SA, the live performances on saw the girls unleash some powerhouse pipes as the battle for the throne continues heating up.

The ladies opened the show with a mini-tribute to Beyoncé as they took turns showcasing vocal prowess during a performance of Run The World and Formation.

The theme of the night zoomed in on the Bestselling Female Artists of the 21st Century, and to help the stage newbies were award-winning Shekhinah harmonising her hit Different featuring Mariechan.

First to take make a solo appearance was diminutive Christmas baby, Thando, singing American Idol alumna Jennifer Hudson’s Giving Myself. While Randall felt she didn’t get to belt it out because it was too big a song, Unathi called the performance “exceptional” and Somizi said she had “killed” it.

Aspirant music writer, Bongiwe, followed with the impassioned Beneath Your Beautiful by Labrinth feat. Emeli Sandé. The rendition had Unathi declaring: “You’re in it to win it! The competition has just begun!”

Attridgeville’s blonde ambition, Wattahmelon, may have struggled with the first verse of Fantasia’s Lose to Win according to Somizi and Unathi, but she hit all the right notes with Randall, who declared she was “fantastic from start to finish!”

Recent birthday girl, Nosipho, saw Unathi and Somizi give her performance of Sia’s Alive an enthusiastic thumbs up, while Randall was also impressed with her delivery of an 80s big sound ode. The judges may have been giving mixed reviews, but all three agreed that the girls were still running ahead of the boys halfway through the show.

Xae, who is a self-confessed car karaoke lover, hit the trifactor of adulation when she left Randall speechless, Somizi shouting “genius” and Unathi calling it “brilliant!” for her rendition of SZA’s Broken Clocks.

Season 14’s youngest contestant, Yanga, slowed it down with Adele’s monster hit, Don’t You Remember. Again, it was two to one as Randall felt it dragged while Somizi and Unathi loved it, with Somizi awarding it a “whoo shem”.

Ntokozo brought it home and kept it local with Ndiza by Zahara. She undoubtedly received the best ovation of the evening. “Best performance of the night!” said Somizi. “I’d much rather listen to you off-key than six other contestants on key,” Randall announced. “Your imperfections were perfect,” was Unathi’s declaration.

Closing off the show was Delene with Whitney Houston’s It’s Not Right But It’s Okay. It didn’t turn out to the big bang closing that was expected, with Randall and Somizi feeling it failed to launch while Unathi believed she would be memorable.

The judges have handed out a mixed bag of sweets and lemons, but it’s ultimately up to the voting public to push through their favourite to the Top 10. Let’s see what the results bring next week!

Yanga wins Idols SA

The race between Yanga and Thato came to a dazzling conclusion tonight when 17-year-old Yanga snatched victory to become South Africa’s next superstar.

Mzansi collectively held its breath as millions of eyeballs trained on host Proverb, crossing fingers for their favourite to be named the SA Idols Season 14 winner. Yanga, who becomes the second consecutive teenage girl from the Western Cape to win the title after last year’s Paxton, becomes an instant millionaire thanks to a staggeringly awesome prize package that includes a record deal, car and a myriad of other glamorous prizes.

“I can’t put into words how I feel right now, but I can say it in song,” said a shell-shocked Yanga a few seconds after her name was called, before bursting into a gratitude chorus.

Her runner-up, Thato, gave her a warm congratulatory hug and thanked Mzansi for the immerse support. And what support South Africa has shown, with a season record of 142 million votes, surpassing the targeted 100 million that Proverb had set in the beginning of the season.

After gruelling months of sweat, blood and tears, tonight was a two-hour celebration of a great season that saw some of the youngest contestants on the Idols stage in a while.

Idols SA: Thando Sent Home as Thato and Yanga Sprint To The Finish Line!

Published

on

The road to the SA Idols final may have come to an end for Thando, but last night’s live show was more of a celebration than a sad farewell.

The Top 10 made a surprise return to the stage to memorialise the record-breaking 110 million votes garnered over the season so far, with nearly 22 million of those coming in over the past week as Mzansi fans fought to keep their favourites in the competition.

Small in stature and big in voice, Alberton’s pride leaves Idols with a bagful of memories and an amazing experience including a Dubai trip and a newly-recorded single called Wasting Time, which she performed live and is already available on most digital platforms.

Yanga and Thato, who Mzansi chose as their finalists for Season 14, also debuted their first-ever singles tonight.

Yanga received a standing ovation from the audience and two of the judges for her deeply emotive performance of Scars (All Over Me), which left Unathi near-tears and calling her “wonderous”. Somizi was happy that she took his advice last week to “not relax” until the competition is over. Randall told her: “You have chosen to be a winner.”

Thato’s single, Blow By Blow, is an up-tempo breakup tune where he seeks to understand what happened to the love. Somizi didn’t think the song suited him but agreed with the other judges that his energy and performance keep drawing people in and make him one of the most likeable contestants on the show.

Their second performance was preceded by lively entertainment courtesy of the vibrant Tsonga rap princess Sho Madjozi, performing her hit Huku.

When the finalists came back for the Theatre Week song, they blessed Mzansi with even more beautiful music. Yanga sang Heaven by Emeli Sande, and Thato’s song was Sam Smith’s I’m Not The Only One.

Tonight, the Idols certainly pushed boundaries as they sang three songs each. Their last performance was Song Of The Season, which they felt was their best. Yanga went with Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart by Alicia Keys. Thato chose If by Davido, closing off the last ever voting show of the season.

Unathi surmised Yanga by calling her a blessing to Mzansi. “Thank you for sharing your gift on music with us, and I’m honoured to have been witness to your greatness.” Somizi said he was a happy man and at peace, and Randall told her “You’ve got it!”

Thato was also showered with great compliments. Randall even did a “zaka zaka; whoo shem!” for him, shortly before Somizi bestowed his own upon him. Unathi said: “You make us fall in love with you; that’s your power. Thank you for your gift!”
