Bonang Covers GQ’s “Power Issue”!

Bonang has become the first female South African celeb to get a standalone GQ cover, ever! Details on the “Power” Issue

Bonang covers GQ Magazine

Our Queen Bonang has become the first female South African celebrity to feature as a stand alone on the cover of GQ Magazine

The men’s lifestyle publication on Thursday unveiled Bonang as the cover girl for their September “Power Issue”. In it, the media Queen tackles the role of power in “the year of the woman”, touches on her hopes for the future and also chats, ironically, about stuff you will never hear her talk about.

And although the issue hits the stands this Monday on the 27th, we wonder if that list includes her highly publicized relationship with her former boyfriend AKA, with whom she split earlier this year.

She threw some subtle hints on how that relationship has shifted her approach to romance on her reality show Being Bonang; revealing at the time that she has not intentions of dating anyone, anytime soon.

She’s also pleading the fifth on her fallout with former BFF Somizi, with whom she’s said to have settled old scores at the recent DStv Viewers Choice Awards announcements private function. Bonang is said to have been polite to Somgaga, despite the recent shade he tossed her way during an appearance on Pearl Thusi’s television show.

Moving beyond all that drama with a kind of grace that she’s become known for, Bonang has been moving on to even bigger wins in her career. Amongst those is her co-hosting duties at the looming Global Citizen stage, where she will be sharing the spotlight with the likes of Dave Chapelle, Trevor Noah and amongst others Oprah Winfrey.

The Power Issue features Bonang striking a bose pose in a black cleavage bearing blazer, which has hints of lightweight rose gold shimmer

South African TV audiences first encountered her through the telly when she first appeared on Generations; The Legacy in the not-so-distant past. Four years later, Thuso Mbedu has paced through hoops to become the first South African actress to score a leading role in an American series!

Mbedu has been picked to star as the lead character on Barry Jenkins’ adaptation of The Underground Railroad. The actress will be taking on the role of Cora – the main character in the critically lauded novel.

The 27 year old’s history of flirtations with Hollywood dates back to 2018 and 2019, when she received International Emmy Award nominations for her stellar portrayal of Winnie on Mzansi Magic drama series – Is’thunzi. Although she didn’t bring any of the prestigious gongs home, there’s no lack of evidence that her star has now sky rocketed to global horizons.

The Underground Railroad tells the story of a young Cora’s journey as she negotiates her way in the pre-war South, according to Variety. Following her escape from a Georgia plantation, she discovers the existence of a railroad with a secret network of tracks and tunnels.

“My thumb and neurons are failing me right”, jotted the actress on her Instagram. “So I’ll just do as most South Africans do when this happens: I GOT THE JOB!!!”

Everyone’s Talking about DJ Sbu’s Nipsey Hussle Speech

DJ Sbu at Nipsey Hussle's memorial

He’s definitely never been afraid to step outside of the convention to make a splashy point.

From plugging his energy drink onstage at the 2015 Metro FM Music awards (and being suspended shortly after), to faking a Forbes Africa cover (which reportedly resulted in legal action), it’s quite obvious that DJ Sbu has mastered the art of shocking. Unprovoked.

The multi hyphenate media personality and entrepreneur grabbed more headlines when on Tuesday, he shared a clip in which he addresses the crowd at Nipsey Hussle’s memorial gathering in Los Angeles, California.

In it, Sbu introduces himself as the ‘ambassador for Hip Hop music’. And more… so much more.

“My name is DJ Sbu. I come all the way from Johannesburg in South Africa. I’m here as an ambassador for Hip Hop music and the culture in the entire African continent. I represent musicians from the whole continent”, says the Sbu in the clip, which does not feature the rest of the speech.

While some have made fun of the questionable claims in the speech, some have commanded the successful entrepreneur’s guts.
