Zonke Dikana makes a triumphant return to the charts with her brand new album L.O.V.E.
Spanning over one hour of Dikana’s most confident vocals strewn over lush and lavish productions, the album’s sonic delight is a result of several perfect ingredients. Amongst others that stand out most clearly is the sheer elasticity of her voice. Goodness!
A reflection of her undeniable growth, which has also clearly stretched to include a richer expression of the singer’s talents, Zonke has never showcased her vocal agility like she does here.
But beyond mere technique, it’s the soul between the riffs that thrills. She sings joyously, and there’s a powerful story behind the peace and groove she articulates so gloriously in each single; opening her heart to you.
Further to luxuriating the jazzy instrumentals; giving them a heartbeat, the showmanship in the production sustains the musical arsenal she’s crafted.
Think about it – Zonke has never been mentioned alongside anyone else. She’s managed to do something most artists struggle with – being in the only 0ne on her turf. Perhaps that’s why on her 5th studio album, Dikana’s creative control couldn’t be clearer.
The nine-track project, which sees Kwesta appearing as the only collaboration, also marks Zonke’s return to the spotlight from an emotional retreat in which she “just wanted to go inside myself and perish”.
This sombre time in the singer’s life was triggered by the untimely passing of her two sisters, including SAMA nominated singer Lulu Dikana, who died in 2014 after a short illness. The loss of her parents and sisters plunged the soulful songstress into a state of depression.
But after retreating from the spotlight to deal with the grief privately, Zonke returns with work that finds her ready to embrace the light once more.
L.O.V.E finds Zonke at her best.
TELLAMAN’s Debut Album, God Decides, Has Arrived
Tellaman has premiered his debut album – God Decides
Last week, we had the privilege of attending Tellaman’s album listening session for God Decides, which took place at his musical home merely hours before the album premiered.
The preview of the looming body of work was a showcase of what sounded like a mellow record from one who’s created the kind of anticipation only a handful of artists can, particularly in the age of streaming. The rules have changed – Kanye set precedence for a 7 track album not long ago. Singles are the new destination and, it seems, their lifespan is now down to just about a month.
Give or take.
The excitement around the soulful vocalist’s first studio album is, therefore, quite telling of the unique space he takes up in the South African soundscape, where we see names replace each other’s relevance with quick succession.
His has been a steady journey; he was certainly in a different space when we had a conversation with him two years ago.
The place he is now, though, informs the not just the work itself, but the many talents behind it.
“For the first time, I wasn’t trying to prove anything. I wasn’t trying to prove that I’m the best producer or writer. I just wanted to bring this idea to life and make sure that it’s exactly how I’d imagined it; if it sounds simple and cheesy or complicated and complex, that’s because I wanted it to sound that way.”
The inspiration behind the album is being in a relationship and trying to make it as a musician, two important aspects of life to balance, and something Tellamanhas yet to figure out. God Decides is about Tellaman meeting a girl he believes he loves and trying to make it as a musician whilst trying to make both work and his relationship work, but she fails to understand, and the industry gets the best of Tellaman.
BUY/STREAM: TELLAMAN – GOD DECIDES
Based on his religious background, Tellaman titled the album God Decides.
“I was taught that I can only do the best I can and let God take care of the rest. I chose ‘God Decides’ as the title of my first album because I have always felt like somehow, I am not fully in control of everything that is happening in my life. I chose the name because I believe I would not be where I am in my life if God didn’t allow it and I wouldn’t have gone through things I write about if God didn’t allow it.”
Featuring Tellaman’s signature melodies, smooth vocals with instrumental highlights, the story of the album is the bigger picture, with each song being a compiled episode that forms the bigger picture. But most importantly Tellaman brings a simplicity in his music in which a young or old person can find something to relate to. Fans can look forward to a new insight into Tellaman’s life; a lot of flaws, love and hope in the form of the music from his debut offering.
“If you want to put a specific style to the album, you can call it ‘Hip Hop/RnB’, but I like to call it good music and just leave it there. This is my life from 2014 until the day I stopped recording it. My mistakes, my good and bad moments in love. I hope what I have gone through will help someone do or choose better than me.”
Look out for our full album review soon.
Boity Long Awaited Second Single Is Here – [LISTEN]
She’s no one hit wonder! Boity debuts triumphant follow up to Wuz Dat with new single, Bakae
Boity on Friday delighted fans when she availed her hotly anticipated second single.
Entitled Bakae, the scorching track comes hot on the heels of the up and coming rapper’s debut single, Wuz Dat, which was first availed for public consumption in August, 2018.
Bakae arrives as debates on whether or not the 28 year old media personality would be able to sustain the hype she was able to build with Wuz Dat, the collaborative project with Nasty C that has amassed over 700 000 views on YouTube, peaked online.
This wouldn’t be the first time Boity had much to prove ahead of premiering music.
A successful acting and entertainment broadcast career notwithstanding, the multi-hyphenate star’s first single not only debuted atop the iTunes chart within hours of release, but continued to help Boity mark her own territory as the country’s hottest female Hip Hop Act.
Bakae builds on this momentum to find Boity showcasing the lyrical gravitas and flawless flow we never knew she had.
