Mzansi Magic’s ‘Our Perfect Wedding’ Has A New Presenter!

OPW Presenter new presenter

Those from the public who’ve been rallying behind calls for the industry to be opened for new faces to grace our screens will be happy to know that things are finally moving forward.

After the departure of Thembisa Mdoda not long ago, popular Mzansi Magic wedding reality show – Our Perfect Wedding, has finally crowned a winner of their Presenter search!

After weeks of various challenges, in which candidates needed to prove their edge and nerve to take over the reigns from a position that has been occupied by established industry greats such as Brenda Ngxoli, Tumelo Morake and Thembisa Mdoda, Kayise Ngqula, a 26-year-old Joburger, walked away with the title.

To clinch the much contested and coveted title, Ngqula paced past finalists Noni Mbete, Natasha Mazomba; Mbasa Fefe; Nolusindiso Macanda and Asanda Nomatshawe Mbali as Mbali Nkosi made the announcement at the finale.

It happened at Shepstone Gardens in Mountain View, Johannesburg.

Covered in strips of confetti, Kayise, an International Relations and Politics student at the University of Johannesburg, could not contain her excitement after the big announcement: “I am over the moon and I cannot wait to start this new journey. I want to give myself fully to this process. One of the things I love about OPW is how it celebrates diversity and even though I’m Xhosa, I hope to share myself with the viewers and include all the amazing cultures we have in this country,” said Kayise.

Along with being crowned the new presenter, Kayise will also walk away with a cash prize of R100 000 courtesy of Mzansi Magic.

She will be making her screen debut in January 2018.

Idols SA: Thando Sent Home as Thato and Yanga Sprint To The Finish Line!

Published

on

The road to the SA Idols final may have come to an end for Thando, but last night’s live show was more of a celebration than a sad farewell.

The Top 10 made a surprise return to the stage to memorialise the record-breaking 110 million votes garnered over the season so far, with nearly 22 million of those coming in over the past week as Mzansi fans fought to keep their favourites in the competition.

Small in stature and big in voice, Alberton’s pride leaves Idols with a bagful of memories and an amazing experience including a Dubai trip and a newly-recorded single called Wasting Time, which she performed live and is already available on most digital platforms.

Yanga and Thato, who Mzansi chose as their finalists for Season 14, also debuted their first-ever singles tonight.

Yanga received a standing ovation from the audience and two of the judges for her deeply emotive performance of Scars (All Over Me), which left Unathi near-tears and calling her “wonderous”. Somizi was happy that she took his advice last week to “not relax” until the competition is over. Randall told her: “You have chosen to be a winner.”

Thato’s single, Blow By Blow, is an up-tempo breakup tune where he seeks to understand what happened to the love. Somizi didn’t think the song suited him but agreed with the other judges that his energy and performance keep drawing people in and make him one of the most likeable contestants on the show.

Their second performance was preceded by lively entertainment courtesy of the vibrant Tsonga rap princess Sho Madjozi, performing her hit Huku.

When the finalists came back for the Theatre Week song, they blessed Mzansi with even more beautiful music. Yanga sang Heaven by Emeli Sande, and Thato’s song was Sam Smith’s I’m Not The Only One.

Tonight, the Idols certainly pushed boundaries as they sang three songs each. Their last performance was Song Of The Season, which they felt was their best. Yanga went with Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart by Alicia Keys. Thato chose If by Davido, closing off the last ever voting show of the season.

Unathi surmised Yanga by calling her a blessing to Mzansi. “Thank you for sharing your gift on music with us, and I’m honoured to have been witness to your greatness.” Somizi said he was a happy man and at peace, and Randall told her “You’ve got it!”

Thato was also showered with great compliments. Randall even did a “zaka zaka; whoo shem!” for him, shortly before Somizi bestowed his own upon him. Unathi said: “You make us fall in love with you; that’s your power. Thank you for your gift!”

Idols SA: King B Bites The Dust As Top Three Jets Off To Dubai

Idols SA Top 3 2018

The race to the finish line is well and truly on!

For Mzansi’s favourite blouse-wearer, King B, it was a case of close yet so far when he missed out on a Top Three spot and a trip to Dubai. This, after a record 16-and-a-half million votes over the past week; proof that voting is reaching fever pitch.

Before Proverb announced who would be leaving the Idols stage, all four contenders got a chance to perform a duet with one of the show’s alumni. Season 8 winner Khaya Mthethwa was paired with Yanga to deliver the Disney classic, Beauty and the Beast. Randall awarded it “the most appropriate song” for the teenager, while Unathi called it her “duet of the night”.

King B and Season 11 runner-up, Mmatema, had a pitch perfect match when they sang Smother, a hate-to-love-you original by last season’s winner Paxton and Craig Lucas. Unathi loved it for being “soulful, sexy and sensuous”.

Season 11 winner Karabo was matched up with Thando for the romantic, The Closer I Get to You. The belter and the delicate crooner had Somizi “hypnotised” and the rest of the judges giving their approval.

Multi-award winner and former contestant, Amanda Black, took to the stage with Thato for Ngamthanda Umuntu, a pairing Randall called “salt and vinegar”. “It’s something you don’t expect to work but it does,” he said.

For Round Two, the Top Three chose a song by their own musical idol.

Thando brought fire to the stage with her performance of Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never. Her fierce act had the judges showering her with praises. “It’s beautiful watching you finally believe in your emotions and performance, because the voice has never been in question,” complimented Unathi.

Thato chose Vusi Nova’s Thandiwe, which Somizi called impeccable. Added Randall: “In 10 years’ time you’re still going to be around, and your versatility is what will keep you here.”

Yanga closed off the show with Khaya Mthethwa’s Mkulumsebenzi. The judges loved her ability to seamlessly move from one style to another, and Somizi encouraged her to keep coming with guns blazing.

Next week, Mzansi will find out who will face off in the finale between Thando, Thato and Yanga. If you want your fave showered in confetti soon, you best get those thumbs working!

We Are Down To Just the Top 4 As Niyaaz Bites The Dust on Idols SA

Top four talented hopefuls remain to battle it out for their lives on Idols South Africa

As we edge closer to the hotly anticipated finale of Idols South Africa season 14, the stakes keep mounting for the remaining handful of hopefuls. But while one of them will soon be crowned South Africa’s next big name in the music business, Niyaaz is no longer in that running.

Sunday night may have started off on a sombre note when Proverb paid respects to his friend and Motswako rap pioneer, Jabulani “HHP” Tsambo, who passed away earlier this week; but the divine spirit soon took over the State Theatre when Dr Rebecca Malope took the entire Mzansi to church!

The gospel superstar enlisted the help of the Top Five to lift the country’s mood with her hit hymn, Moya Wam, backed by the multi-Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir.

The reverence continued for the first round with the Soweto Gospel Choir as the contestants each performed a gospel-themed song. Thato was up first with Jimmy Cliff’s Many Rivers to Cross. The poignant tune received rave reviews from the judges, with Randall predicting that Mzansi will see him in the finale.

Thando’s name was called next, and she blessed all with the Soweto Gospel Choir’s own Ke Na Le Modisa. “See what happens when you have fun!?” he exclaimed. Randall added: “We’ve been waiting for you to enjoy yourself!” Unathi finished off with: “Wooooow! You had character, you had charisma; you were in your element!”

Yanga came on with a medley of Avulekil’Amasango/One Love from the Soweto Gospel Choir. The performance left Somizi speaking in tongues. “Hallelujah!” Randall complemented her, and the rest of the contestants, on stepping up her game; and Unathi called her “amazing”.

It came down to Niyaaz and King B to complete the Top Four and Mzansi voted to keep the teen from Kagiso for another week, saying goodbye to Cape Town’s Niyaaz. King B gifted Mzansi with a powerful rendition of Lebo Sekgobela’s Lion of Judah that had Unathi and several audience members in tears. “You got the first cry this season, so you’ve done something right,” was Somizi’s assessment. Randall simply called his voice “remarkable”.

The second round kicked off with a quintessential Dr Ribs performance that saw her shake the stage with the Soweto Gospel Choice and performing her signature move of “wiping the floor”.

Thato took things continental when he stepped on stage singing Davido’s monster hit, If. The judges again gave him a unanimous thumbs up, with Unathi calling him “magnificent” and Randall praising his “versatility and consistency”. When Somizi voiced his faux-disappointment at not seeing some skin action, Thato awarded his fans a peek of his abs. “Your fans all over the country are now happy!” laughed the judge.

Thando’s second song was Thando by Naima Kay. Somizi shared that last week’s guest judge, Matthew Knowles, had called her “the queen of ballads” and advised her to stick to the genre. “You are a powerhouse!” he declared.

Yanga kept it local with Sjava’s Impilo, which the judges found faultless. Randall’s only advice was: “Next week is going to be a tight and extremely difficult show. Every song will have to be absolutely stand-out to get to the final.” Unathi said she had “no doubt” the youngster will be in the final, and Somizi’s forecast was that she was going to be a superstar, whether she wins or not.

King B closed the show with Kahle by Amanda Black. Unathi called his overall performance “well rounded and balanced” and Somizi begged for more colour and happiness from him next week.

With the final just around the colour, the contestants are bringing their A-game on stage and hoping their fans bring their “thumb game” to the voting battle. Do best to see your fave make it to the Top Three!
