2016 continued being a big year for what many have come to term ‘the golden era’ of Hip Hop in South Africa.
And for a genre that not so long ago lacked commercial viability in this part of the world, new highs were a constant last year. Cassper Nyovest took on Orlando Stadium, a feat that not many legendary artists can claim under their belt.
The likes of AKA, Emtee and Riky Rick shipped platinum in record sales, scored lucrative endorsement deals, expanded their brands through merchandise and became the main headliners for the country’s biggest festivals.
The sky was the limit. Nasty C roped in US actor Omari Hardwick on his ground breaking studio album that topped iTunes despite being initially released for free, Anatti featured Omarion and then brought him out in SA as part of his tour while DuBoiz shot visuals for Dope Dream with Tyga.
In 2017, this trend will continue along with the standard of the game, the lyricism required by lovers of authentic street showmanship and club bangers for those after the fun. Who amongst the up and coming rappers will step up to challenge?
